The sound of the engine never ceased. Its thick, bone-jarring rumble permeated every waking moment and troubled what little sleep the men could snatch between watches. Everyone's temper was thin and sharp, the Captain's worst of all: the robust, honorable man who had commanded this voyage at the start had been hollowed out by the long chase, his determination replaced by ferocity, his duty transformed into a perverse drive for vengeance. The monotonous plains were known for this, but that was no comfort to the exhausted crew.
