not my autobiography, but it's still symbolic

took a lot of bail money in my day
wished that phantom, wished that stone away
took that flag and raised it in the night
left it there and left it out of sight
you know the flesh gets even heavier as you age
can't feel the lust - can't feel the rage
i hope the money adds up, i hope the days don't subtract
just want a chance for a 2nd act
and a house by the river would please me
no boat, no dock, just watching life roll on
give the morning to the heron, rising up her wing
a house by the river would be a good thing

took a lot of numbness for the pain
slept in the phantom's arms and woke up with the stain
did a lot of things i didn't want to do
walked away from nothing, walked away the dew
you could say i spent some years being pretty wrong
and now i struggle to breathe through every song
vanity and habit - it's just what i do
it might not be important but it's true
and a house by the river would please me
