Bruce went to CBGBs (to see Suicide)
December 8, 2024 9:29 PM
I just learned that Bruce Springsteen was a huge fan of the synth-punk band Suicide in the late 1970s and used to rock out right up at the stage at their shows in NYC. I decided to do my first weekend recording bender in a while in an effort to assimilate that unlikely factoid.
It was a blast to try to figure out how to approximate Suicide's weirdo distorted farfisa-meets-rhythm ace sound. I think I woke up the neighbors as far as two blocks down when I did that scream at the end.

I just listened to State Trooper and you're definitely right. It's not even hidden at all. I just grew up with I'm on Fire and Glory Days-era Bruce, so the pairing seemed much more random to me.

ok...so the way the aggressive delay...fuck, how do you do that?
reminds me a bit of the silliness they pulled on conor oberst's synthesthete
I once read a review of the modest mouse song tiny cities made of ashes that called it if aphex twin made love to kurt cobain. how did you do this?
how come it seems like elvis costello snuck in the back door?
do you get tired being this hot? what a jerk

ha! I'm glad you like it. I just used the standard tape delay that comes with logic. The agressive parallax-y parts are when I automated the feedback fader, moving it from under 100% to around 200% and back. It was all just something I threw together after listening a lot to the band suicide and then hearing from some friends that Bruce was a superfan and thinking about how random that was. I just tried my best to emulate their sound, with its grimy farfisa sound that bridges 60s garage stuff and their weirdo 70s punk adjacent thing. Maybe the farfisa is what makes you think of early elvis costello?
The other ingredient that I really love and want to use more is this ipad omnichord app called polychord that I think stopped being supported a long time ago and I'm afraid is going to stop working at any minute. It has not just buttons for almost all the chords you'd ever want to use, but also these janky rhythm ace style early drum rhythms and odd arpeggios to go along with them.
Oh, and I had so much fun doing that scream at the end.
