Your Little One Way Street

... you strive to be elsewhere, but you already are, you know ...

My buddy Ken Kawashima was in town just recently and this is one of the tracks he lent his sure and steady guitar groove to. Prior flapjax posts to MeFi Music with contributions from Ken include Lexington Avenue Line, Bridge in the Sky and Until You Sever the Snake.

YOUR LITTLE ONE WAY STREET

your clock's running fast
my clock's running slow
let's put 'em beside each other
and see which way they go

i been walking so long baby
down your little one way street
the soles on my shoes
have worn right through to my feet

the leaves will fall
the wind will blow
you strive to be elsewhere
but you already are you know

whether you stay for 20 years
or only for a half a minute
it won't mean nothing
if your heart ain't in it

when you told me that you loved me
just what exactly did that mean
whatever it is you're giving me
it's like no love i've ever seen

i looked to the sky for guidance
but there's only clouds up there
it could rain all night on me
but i don't believe you'd care

it's just another 6 months honey
til my birthday rolls around
i'll either spend it back in memphis
or else six feet underground

This is great. The guitar sounds fantastic (the spring!), and combined with the brush groove, it's almost hypnotic. In a good way.

combined with the brush groove...

Thanks uncleozzy, I'm glad you like it! The brush groove ain't brushes, though, it's sandpaper: two pieces rubbed together. Old percussionist trick!

Sandpaper... fantastic!

Yeah, it's like early-90's Tom Waits-ish, but with a finer grain of sandpaper, and a smoother finish. Compliments to the chefs!

[ZOMG, I didn't even read the above comments about the sandpaper until I typed this. ACTUAL sandpaper: trick noted!]

Is that you singing? It doesn't sound like you (what I'm used to). Sounds great though. Love the sandpaper!

Yep, that's me. Hmm, sounds like me to my ears... wonder what's different? Reverb, maybe?
