Honesty

A nearly-finished track. Looking for suggestions. I feel like I should add a field recording of some kind, but I'm not sure what kind. I'm feeling a little bit of speech.

I also thought starting off with the drums alone was cool at first, but with more listens, it's a little weird.

The drum intro is quite cool, as it's an interesting pattern. My issues are more generic to this kind of music, in that it sounds like a bunch of loops sequenced together on a grid. Oh, yeah, there's a bass loop coming in now, and so on. I'm not au fait enough with the current sample libraries to know if you programmed the drums yourself or they're a commercial loop, but the fact that it leaves me wondering is, for me, a problem.

I don't mean to be negative -- it sounds completely fine as a chillout track -- but personally I increasingly have a problem with tracks that sound like a stack of loops that are being faded in and out. If the loops are original, I'd suggest doing more to suggest that they are indeed original -- for example, pulling that drum loop apart and playing with it.

Wow you got me, that's exactly what it was. The stuff was all sequenced by myself, but yeah, I basically just kind of recorded this with a bunch of loops i cooked up and then put it all together. The "stack of loops" thing is a problem I generally have with writing music. I get a bunch of loops and then end up being too lazy (or complacent) to add any variation. Since this is a work in progress, I'll definitely take your suggestions into consideration.

Well, if you cooked that drum loop up yourself, you are VERY good! I loved it.
