The Card Cheat

I've had a bit of Clash fever lately, and a Kaossilator that I'm playing with.

I keep fussing with the vocals, both in terms of pan (the other mix I sort of like has each vocal track kicked all the way out to one side, but I think I like the centered effect a little better) and reverb (my biggest beef with GarageBand is that I can either get reverb-free or reverb-drenched vocals out of it, no middle ground).

My big goal (aside from not hosing over a song I love) was keeping the Kaossilator parts from crossing the line into abrasive noise... that line's probably defined by personal taste, though...

Excellent! I love the way the noisy parts fit in, and the overall feel is very nice. You kind of went the opposite direction from what we did to cover this song, it is really enjoyable.

So who is going to cover this song next month?

Thanks a lot! And it's funny, your version kind of accidentally played into it. I'd been really gun-shy about touching any Clash songs, but I remembered seeing one here that I really liked (could remember that it was a song from London Calling, but couldn't remember which) and figured what the hell. During a break from recording guitar tracks, I got curious and looked back through MeFi Music to see what the other one was... and then started laughing.

I wound up referring back to your version to see how someone without a Mick Jones accent approached the vocal phrasing...

Oh man, that's great! I love this place for that kind of unconscious inspiration, there's so much different stuff here it can't help but affect you in unforeseen ways.
