flyball's lament (the verbose version)

May 7, 2011 9:50 PM

this is a take on 'Flyball's Lament' by the Great Big Mulp, which was also covered by ORthey... I made up some additional lyrics about space hazards some time last year, and I've been playing it at parties and whatnot - basically whenever people talk me into playing in front of a crowd.

Well they sent me up back in '93
And the rest as they say is ancient history,
except there ain't much of a story when you're trapped in outer space
You just kind fall forever without gettin' anyplace.
You get your head up in the sky
and your heels over your head;
Better wach the life support so you don't wake up dead;
As the power runs lower it should come as no surprise
That this inverse-square law is gonna spell my demise.

(Now it's been so long since I've seen my baby
that I don't think she'd mind if I found a new lady.
Thanks to the effects of special relativity
She's my elder by about three centuries.)
So if some kind being should hear of my distress
I sure as hell hope it looks good in a dress
It gets oh so lonely up here in outer space,
I just throw my head back and I sing.

Space, it's cold and it's lonely;
I wish I wasn't the only guy in space.

Hmm.. If the oblique physics references count as 'educational,' I guess I could count this towards the May Music challenge, too...

Fantastic.

"if some kind being should hear of my distress / I sure as hell hope it looks good in a dress" is unbeatable.

Awesome! You have just fixed what has otherwise been a pretty crummy day!

Glad to hear it, Mr. Mulp!

Thanks for writing the original. I played around with it a bunch while I was stranded in a certain town last spring, bringing a bit of fun to a mostly dismal situation. I've been meaning to record this for MeFiMu for something like six months, just to give it back to the community. I had told one of my friends it was a cover of a song by The Great Big Mulp, and he spent a day trying to search up the couple of lyrics he knew on google to no avail...

Many thanks!
