Have You Seen Me?

June 9, 2010 8:12 AM

On the subject of insomnia in a foreign country.

It's a funny thing about leaving;
you never know just quite where you've been.

I can stare at the ceiling til the morning light
I can't sleep at night
It's like I don't know what to dream
So I just lay there in a daze
It makes me want to scream.
What's the point in having so much time
If you just lose your mind
Thinking what you should have did
And was it all right?
Was it all right?

It's a funny thing about living;
you never know just quite who you is.

Do you ever get to fearing that you're paranoid
That you're someone's toy
On a too-short length of string
And you can dance any time you like
But do you really like to dance?
Soon you're never certain bout what day it is
Was that choice yours or his?
You wonder what it's like to be free.
Does it scare you?
It sure scares the hell outta me.

It's a funny thing about funny things;
you never know just quite what they mean.

And I can write you letters til my pen goes dry
until the day I die
But the words I'll never send
So I just spin 'em in my head
Round and round again.
I'm just an echo of the boy you knew
Now that I've seen a few
Things that didn't need done -
Have you seen me?
Have you seen me?

(couple of on-tape errors and missed a word or two. [s/shadow/echo]. But it'll just be better motivation to re-record if I ever get around to putting things down properly... But on the bright side, this is probably one of the better-sounding one-take one-microphone recordings I've managed. This Zoom H2 is freakishly good.)

Really like this; great bright uke sound and nice vocal.

This is the H2, eh? Sounds good, yeah.

Did you record it in said foreign country? And do I hear birds in the background?

Yeah; I'm in France on a research grant for three months, eating lots of chesse and not really knowing the language. And occasionally recording a song in my 9m^2 room...
