Yes, the real Hammond's an amazing thing. It just blends with the band sound, even when it's absolutely thundering. Never sits on top of the mix, like a keyboard through the PA does. And the Leslie throws out sound in every direction so it's really room-filling.
The best thing is when John stomps on the swell and does one of his big upward glissandos and it's like a friggin' rocket taking off, really an amazing thing.
He's playing an A100 here which is basically a B3 in a different case, with added reverb, through a tube Leslie. I have an M3 with a Leslie 760 which I thought sounded fantastic (well, it does, actually) but when he brought in the A100 it was another world.
The thing I was most surprised about is that the Leslie doesn't really care how you mic it. It's not finicky at all. It's almost impossible to get it to sound bad. You can stick one or two 57s almost anywhere and it's fine.
The other thing that surprised me about them is that they are damn near indestructible. You could drop them down a stairwell and they'd still work, and still be in tune too.
