Take It Apart

Back in the late '80s, I challeneged myself to write a song in a style I usually dislike. Soul II Soul's "Back to Life" and "Keep On Movin'" were all over the radio back then, so I used them as a model.

I had a chip on my shoulder about those songs because they were radio hits and must therefore suck. But this exercise made me realize I did in fact like them.

On this mix, I added strings and replaced my sucky original custom-made beat with a facsimile of the beat used on "Back to Life". I also couldn't help but sneak in a quote.

Vocals on this recording need some cleaning up, though.

Oh, this is good, the phrasing and harmonies and the melody. It bops along. It hits me like an unexpected new flavor.
