Dear Hilary

July 9, 2008 11:28 AM

A cover of a song by Burning Airlines. Not about the senator from NY.

Woke up with this song in my head one morning, and had to record a version of it to scratch the brain-itch. I've been recording myself singing to get over cringing when I hear my voice played back.
Done on PC with ableton, reason, a bass, and a mic.

-also, my first post to metafilter.

Welcome to MeFi!

Musically and production quality, this is really good. It does seem pretty tentative, vocally, though. Maybe that was intentional?

I agree with kingbenny, both on the quality and the voice -- though as someone who is not yet confident enough in his voice to start recording it (or at least posting recordings to MeFi Music), I feel your pain.

This is very nice, though. I'm a sucker for irregular meter, so it's nice to hear some 7. :-)

I'm not familiar with the song. I like the rhythm, and the voice layering. I think the keys are mixed too loudly, but there are some really great arrangement things going on here. I agree that the voice seems tentative and it's pitchy in places. However, the sound of your voice in and of itself is nice. I urge you to just keep recording and singing, because this is super-common. I had the same thing when I started recording my own voice. I was nervous and shy even if I was alone in a room and you could hear it in the recording. But I kept trying and trying and trying, and nowadays when people hear my songs, they may not think I'm any kind of vocal talent but they generally think the delivery is fairly confident and serviceable.

I think this sounds pretty damn good overall, and it's a really interesting song. Hope you'll keep posting.
