Mediocre Savior

August 7, 2008 11:19 AM

Another SongFight! entry. Features children's instruments, plucked ukulele and my best impression of a man who's going to die of a head cold.

Mediocre Savior is the song that was frustrating me earlier this week, mentioned here. Previously I couldn't get the vocals right, but last night I had the advantage of an oncoming illness to get the gravel going; this is as close to sounding like Tom Waits as I could ever hope to pull off.

Recorded from scratch last night, a few lyrics written but most improvised, did four takes with different lyrics/approaches and went with the last one. Features a tambourine and xylophone poached from our toybox, ukulele and egg shaker, everything else is GarageBand.

Vocals and real instruments all recorded through my MacBook's internal mic.

I'm sometimes accused of sounding like Tom Waits, because I sometimes just growl my songs, but this is actually a really good Waits impression, particularly instrumentally. And, honestly, it would be a pretty good Waits song as well.

A very good one indeed. You should add the tomwaitsimpression tag to it.
