The Inflatable Guitar

January 23, 2009 2:36 PM

Inflatable guitars. Not those silly toys. I mean actual playable guitars. Which inflate. If you missed the excellent recent post about the Baschet brothers and their strange crystal / metal hybrid resonator.. things, you may also have missed what was for me a key snippet of information - one of the Baschets invented the inflatable guitar.

It took much longer than I thought it would to find a photo of the inflatable guitar mentioned entirely in passing on the Wikipedia page, as if it were not a detail of extreme importance, but there is one here. While looking, turns out there's more inflatable guitars, of another design, here. Anyone actually played one of these things or know about any others? It's hard to search for these things because so much of what comes up is about cheap childs toys and not important breakthoughs in guitar technology.

Q: How do you get an inflatable guitar player to turn down?

A: Put some inflatable music in front of him.

There's some sort of direct correlation between how much I'd love to see the answer to a question and how unlikely it is that I'll get to see that answer. I'm hoping this one turns out to be the exception, motty, because holy wow.
