Can I play flamenco?

March 4, 2009 2:23 PM

Second in the "Can I play" series... I'm not formally trained in flamenco in any way shape or form, and listening to professional flamenco players and then this reveals that I can't play flamenco. But I did want to call it Faux Flamenco so I guess it sits in that style well enough. In fact its really bad - since I use a pick in the first section! In my defence, I don't have nails. It starts out slow but ramps up dramatically later on.

So maybe you're not Carlos Montoya reincarnated, but man, I really like this. There are parts where I can even imagine the girls dancing and stomping their feet.

FWIW, I LOVE flamenco guitar but it's very annoying trying to find new music; artists either totally suck OR they suffer from the Ingve Malmstein effect, soo many chops and so little heart. THIS piece was right on!

(forgive me if you're a Malmstein fan!)

I sometimes listen to Yngwie Malmstein and appreciate the technicality of the playing, but its not my style (obviously) - so I know where you are coming from.

Thanks for the feedback again, I'm glad to have somewhere to put my stuff where people can enjoy it if it suits them.

You may not play "real" Flamenco, but you can definitely rock a guitar, and I admire that you are working to make yourself more versatile as a musician. That's one of the traits I respect most.
