Lackawana Standoff

April 28, 2009 8:00 PM

Bluesy, down-home saga of rebellion.

This came along in a dream, I wrote it out and recorded it the next day. There was a bit more that happened in the dream, but it didn't fit.

Later, I learned that a "Charlie" from Lackawana PA was refusing to give up his seat in the state legislature. Coincidence? I think not!

Fantastic layout of the sound. I really like the way everything is spread around the "room". Ooh, that thing that comes in at 1:52 just came in. I have no idea what that is, but it sounds really nice. There it is again. Is it guitar with mad effects? Kudos on those high piano notes, and on not having them playing all the time, they are a nice accent when they come in.

Lovely, lovely song, Liv Pooleside. Did you record it all by yourself?

Nice song. And I agree with micayetoca on the mix — it really brings out the mood of the song and gives it a ton of atmosphere.

Swampy! That percussion is cool -- is it Charlie banging his shoe on the table? This has a great mood to it.

Thanks for listening! That sound is me thwacking on the upright bass, in a small room. (you'll notice that the bass drops out when that sound comes in)

It was recorded to a Tascam Porta-II, and it's all me. About the only time I tried slide on a 12 string...

I love this for the same reason I love Carole King's Smackwater Jack, but this is a lot heavier, and it's a really down and dirty delivery. I love your voice on "brass pistol." Actually, I like it all over. And as mentioned those high piano shots get right into my backbone. And that bass noise is great too. Thanks for posting this one!
