The Bottom Falls Out of the Clouds (demoriffic version)

September 30, 2009 11:59 PM

cortex was kind enough to let me borrow the lyrics from his song "The Bottom Falls Out of the Clouds" (which he wrote for the first ever MeFi Music Challenge), and allow me to set them to new folky/acoustic/lo-fi music for this month's challenge.

I really liked cortex's lyrics a lot (as well as his music), and since autumn just began last week, they seemed very fitting. The song I've posted here is basically an "ideas recording" that I recorded very quickly in one weekday evening. It doesn't use an exact version of the lyrics -- meaning, I ended up repeating some lines, and I didn't realize until after I'd recorded that I left out the repeat of the last line -- hopefully that doesn't disqualify the song from this month's challenge... I didn't have enough time to record the part for second guitar for "real" so this version has just three layers: guitar, vocals, and some harmony vocals.

In any case, I'm really glad to contribute something to MeFi Music, finally. This challenge in particular was a great way to get back in gear (no pun intended) and start record songs again, which I haven't done in a really long time and had been missing. So thanks mediocre and flapjax at midnite. And thanks again to cortex for letting me borrow his lyrics!

Those harmonies are really pretty.

Pretty tasty. Welcome to MeFiMu!

That is some wonderful guitar playing, and you have a beautiful voice! No need for a second guitar, in my opinion. Have you heard of Tiny Vipers? I got a similar feeling from your song, and that's a really good thing.

Really hope you post more!

Insanely good vocals! The guitar playing is stellar too, but I love your voice. Hope you'll keep posting.

Very pretty. Perfect accompaniment to this Chicago weather.

Thank you very much for the welcome and kind words! It's been literally years since I wrote/recorded/shared a full song, so it's great to return to writing music/recording and see your comments and encouragement. I'm hoping that that working on the challenge song will kick-start some momentum for a new project.

Corduroy, actually I haven't, but I will definitely take a listen. Aside from always being open to discovering new music, I'm always looking for suggestions for "similar artists" and "RIYL" (Recommended If You Like) since I'm usually stumped about that sort of thing, so thanks for mentioning it.

Little linguistic objection: when you call it "demoriffic version", it sounds like it is horrific, and it is actually very, very good. Everyone above said it better, but I still wanted to congratulate you. Welcome here and definitely keep posting.

Or terrific, of course. And it's pretty terrific, so hey.

I'm glad you got some use of out my lyrics, rangefinder. This is really great, I couldn't ask for a nicer treatment.
