Little Bug on the Floor

February 4, 2010 11:52 PM

This fast and dirty recording is from the mic on a Sony CyberShot camera. It's no audiophile's dream, for sure, but I just felt like getting some recent jaw harp tunes down to live video the other day, as I had a free hour in a big conference room. The room is definitely present in the recording. Anyway, video of this performance can be seen at YouTube and Vimeo.

LITTLE BUG ON THE FLOOR

last time i saw you babe
you were getting on board a train
getting on board a train
that rolled off in the night
in the night

no matter what i'm saying
i'm really just thinking of you babe
really just thinking of you babe
you're rattling round my head
round my head

there's a little bug on the floor
that maybe i'll go and step on
maybe i'll go and step on
what difference would it make
would it make

i could say that i don't miss you
but that just wouldn't be true babe
that just wouldn't be true
and everybody'd know i was lying
everybody'd know i was lying
know i was lying

don't wanna go to sleep
my dreams are fulla ghosts babe
dreams are fulla ghosts babe
and every one of 'em's got your face
every one of 'em's got your face
got your face

there's a little bug on the floor
that maybe i'll just go step on
maybe i'll go and step on
what difference would it make
would it make
would it make

The acoustics serve this pretty well. Not hollow or blown out. Silly question, but I'm wondering what software you use for your videos. I really dig the various effects you use.

Thanks sns. Yeah, actually, the sound isn't so bad, it's just the audible hum of the air conditioning vents and such that bother me a bit.

Your question certainly isn't silly, BTW. I use iMovie's onboard video processing for this and all other clips I've made. They've got some good stuff in there, and it's easy to work with. I want Final Cut Pro, though, I tell ya...

Man, you "i" people get ALL the good stuff built in! I just read up on Final Cut Pro, and yea, that's worth writing to Santa for.

That Dan Moi is so cool.

Man, you are not fucking around with that jew's harp. I can still barely get "eeeddleeedleedledleeedKRNGOWGODDAMMITMYTEETH" out of mine.

Thank you kindly, Karlos and cortex!

Flapjax, cortex brings up a good point...you've been playin' that a lot lately...don't chip a tooth on it!

*hangs head...sadly, knows from experience*

This is not bad (in fact, it's quite good), but mr. flapjax is even more impressive on that thing when he plays Dan Moi #1. [YouTube only, not MeFi Music.] Truly mind-boggling.

Thank you, LeLiLo, and yes, that one is indeed more of a showcase for Dan Moi-ing: much more so than this current one, which is more about singing a song.

Love the lyrics and the room sound. That's pretty intense having just vocal and jaw harp. Works out much better than I would have guessed.

This is fantastic.

In defense of the Sony CyberShots, I've used mine to record street musicians and carnivalesque stuff while traveling around and I'm always surprised with the range of audio it captures. Not as perfect as you would find in a CD, sure, but pretty impressive for a point-and-shoot camera. Did you use the iMovie to extract the audio here? if not, what did you use?

And hearing this I realized you never use effects on your voice (or don't do it that much), but here it sounds as if it had an effect and it sounds cool. That might be something worth considering in the future.
