(Nothing But) Flowers - alternate mix

July 11, 2010 2:13 AM

An earlier generation of what LOOM uploaded a few days back. This one made us both wear cheesy grins. IMHO it has a little more "oomph" and focus, and highlights LOOM's really rather splendid vocal performance to better effect. Be afraid, be very afraid.....we plan to do more of these.......

You people are sick! SICK!

This had my 10-year-old nodding her head until LOOM started singing. Then she left the room. That's not necessarily any sort of statement on the artistic validity or value, however. It could just be a coincidence.

Whose song is this, BTW? I know I've heard it somewhere.

Oh, and just want to say, this sort of collaboration bodes well for the MeFiMu common good.

It's originally by Talking Heads. You should check out the final mix, too.

It's always been my goal to make a 10-year-old leave the room with every performance...my mission is complete for the day.

Great song, and I think this mix sounds more clean and focused than the first one posted.

Thematically this song is such a companion of XTC's River of Orchids (lyrics here).

Then she left the room.

Well at least, Flapjax, she had the grace not to comment whilst making a hasty exit. I was taking one of my kids somewhere yesterday and put this on in the car. Her hastily qualified comment was "I really like that - it's not you singing".

have to say i prefer the other mix, but that's just me. not that there's a huge difference between them.

yup, more please.

here's the skinny on this one, for me: the percussion is the first take, which we ended up re-recording because they were a bit too wonky, tempo-wise. some of the bits sound better to me, (e.g. kick and shaker), but I prefer the structure we ended with for the instrumental section/breakdown, and the use of a little more lighthanded guitar. The whole mix here actually feels lighter here, though, probably because of the less prominent percussion.

The bongos here, also, are a single take through a delay pedal, which is what I used instead of a tempo/click track for the whole thing. I think it's a better take than either of the two which ended up in the final take, too. It's a tough call, even for me, but I do prefer the final mix more, overall.
