A Birthday Song (Older and Wiser)

September 7, 2010 7:47 PM

I asked Jessamyn what she wanted for her birthday, and she asked me to write a sincere song for her. I just finished the recorded version, but I did get to sing it to her, live and in the middle of the woods, on her actual birthday. NOW THAT'S SINCERE!

ingredients:
4 acoustic guitar strumming tracks
2 slide acoustic guitar tracks
4 handclapping tracks
1 bang-on-acoustuic-guitar-with-palm track (pitch corrected)
1 shake-plastic-jar-full-of-coins track
2 vocal tracks
and maybe a track I forgot about

Directions:
1) tune guitar approx. one note down
2) make sure it's hot and muggy and you're hungry
3) record most of the tracks in two hours
4) go away for a few days to celebrate actual birthday with jessamyn
5) come back, eat a hamburger, record vocals

Don't mind the vocal clunkers. Serve hot off the grill.

Nice. For some reason, listening to this in headphones, I picture lots of different not_on_displays playing, singing and clapping the parts all together in the same room, like all of the John Malkovichs in that one crazy scene in Being John Malkovich.

ah, the power of panning everything to its own little position along the hemisphere, and a miniature door hidden behind a file cabinet.
