December Challenge - HOLIDAY MUSIC

December 8, 2011 7:04 AM

Just to confirm - your December Challenge is HOLIDAY MUSIC, with possible bonus points below the fold.

There's something about Holiday Music that brings out the absolute worst in songwriters. Whether it's the Christmas Date Rape song, TSO having its way with the rotting corpse of Pachalbel, Jimmy Eat World unforgiveably resurrecting the rotting corpse of Wham or the mesmerising lyrical trainwreck that is Do They Know It's Christmas ("Thank God it's them not you" -- really?), it appears to be the time of year that taste goes out the window. So I invite you too to have your wicked way with one of the rotting corpses of holiday music.

PS you really have to watch that Band Aid video. Mindblowing. I particularly loved the fact that they cut to Sting on the word 'sting', and how Bono practically comes in his pants when singing 'clanging chimes of doom'. But it's great from beginning to end.

I was actually embarrassed listening to that TSO track; I felt vicarious shame. It was like being told a racist joke and being poked in the ribs like, "eh? eh?" afterwards.

Although I do sort-of like "Last Christmas."

What if i take a really good Christmas song and turn it into a terrible dance track?

This could go horribly wrong. A couple of days ago I had to explain what a sphincter was to my youngest kid. Apparently little kids were running around calling each other sphincter head and sphincter face. He understood what it was, no big deal. Five minutes later he was crooning around the house singing the Christmas classic, Walking in a Sphincter Wonderland.

I believe you have your challenge song, sns.

Empath, there's only one way to find out.

This version of the Sugar Plum Fairy was playing in a store when we were shopping yesterday. I thought it was great, the drums just worked perfectly and it was hard not to groove to it, all echoing through the store and boomy-like.

Walking in a Sphincter Wonderland.

Is it bad that I still find this really funny at 34?
