Regrets (St. Augustine)
June 11, 2013 10:35 PM
This is the first in a series of rap songs I'm making about the Catholic saints.
(Not really).
The guitar and the "your spirit is haunting me" vocal sample come from this live recording of "Spirit" by Eric Burden and War and then the drum loop is from "Doggone" by Love, and there's a lot of extra percussion and kick drums that I added. The rest of it I played with various VSTis. Oh, and the chorus is borrowed from Jay-Z.
I've apparently been working on this song since October 31, 2012, and at just over three minutes and 20 seconds that's a rate of almost thirty seconds per month. Feedback on anything at all is totally appreciated. Thanks!

Aw, it might even be true about the saints. Who is to say? I've been reading that Bible so a lot of religious stuff is coming out in my writing and I'm cool with that. So, let's say the next one will be about Justin Martyr.
I'm not familiar with Dalek at all, but from what I gather they're into the Public Enemy with thing with layered percussion tracks and this beat came from a time when I was experimenting with a lot of that stuff
I made the beat for this before Push came out. I remember coming up with the guitar riff by chopping a little bit of the intro to "Spirit" and jamming on my Korg padKontrol until I found a groove I liked.
The padKontrol is in the closet now though, and I still love the Push. I learned how to play "Bewitched" on it! In fact, here's a thing I made completely with the Push, fake jazz drums, piano riff, everything.
As for the performance, I'm not a great rapper, and I don't know if that's the best I can do but I judged it good enough. There are a couple of parts that definitely sound like I'm racing ahead of the beat. So, it's some combination of intent and incompetence.
Thanks for the comments, dubold. It's appreciated.

hey, that's an apt summary of my entire musical output...
One of my favorite Dälek tracks

d'ooh, suckered me in with that one.
Production reminds me a bit of Dälek, which I'd consider a good thing. I saw in one of your other comments you're using a Push; still liking that? Did it have an effect on your workflow with this track?
Performance-wise, i felt like your vocal timing could have been a little tighter, felt like it was kinda drifting around the beat. Now, that can be a stylistic choice, so if it's your intent, fair enough.
