Hot Cha

It's They Might Be Giant's Hot Cha for the MetaFilter Flood cover album. And, yes, it goes a bit strange at times.

This is fabulous. I love the jekyll and hyde thing between chiptune metal and 30s swing. It works so well. Such playful madness these tmbg covers bring out in everyone.

Kick-ass. What's neat about this whole thing is that Flood is an extremely dated flavor of quirk, and, especially in tracks like this, we get to hear it flavored with updated quirk.

I strenuously dispute the datedness of Flood's quirk.

The quirk itself, yes, is timeless, but the sound--the drum machine, the sampled instruments--are pure late-80s.

I didn't think of this until just now: everything I used (as far as instruments and effects) was technically available in the late 80s. Bass, ukulele, piano, an (emulated) NES waveform generator, and a modded Korg DDD-1.

Love it! Particularly the use of sort of a hit of static as a percussion instrument...This just sounds flawless to me.
