Until You Kiss Me

UNTIL YOU KISS ME

i left home a long time ago with a bag full of dreams
now all i've got is a pocket full of cinders
at least i made a clean escape from the temple
lord i never want to see another money lender
but i won't have no peace of mind
until you kiss me babe

i blew across the great plains like a plastic bag
from the broken heart of town to the dock of the bay
there ain't that much to say about the wide wide world
people everywhere just sleepwalk in their own little way
and ain't no hope of waking up until you kiss me babe

ours is a strange dilemma don't you know
this life of constant wandering is but a curse
disassembled and rearranged
through a thousand time zones
with just a ticket to ride in that long black hearse
ah but honey we could cheat death for a little while
if you'd just kiss me babe

all i want is a cozy little cottage
with a little garden to sit in on a sunny day
with some trees just tall enough
to block the view of the storm clouds
that'll bring the rains and the flood
that's gonna wash it all away
and you there with me before the deluge
you there to kiss me babe
there to kiss me babe

Oh man, you might think I'm crazy, but you should ask Ms. lynnster to lend her voice to this song. I think her voice would go amazingly well with it.

Not that there's anything wrong with the way you sing it, I just kept imagining while I was listening to it. I read somewhere that she takes requests. That would be awesome.

But in any case, great song, great energy, man. Congrats and hope I didn't cross any lines suggesting that she could sing in it.

Micayetoca: *in my best prima donna/artiste voice* : "How dare you cross the line! You have insulted the flapjax! No more downloads for you!" Ahem. Seriously, though, I can't imagine this is the kind of song ML or any other jazz singer would really want to mess with, at least in its current rough-and-tumble, harmonically primitive state. I reckon a lover of jazz ballads wouldn't be able to do much with this, or, perhaps more accurately, wouldn't want to do much with this! It doesn't even have any chord changes! So, I dunno, I wouldn't say you're crazy to suggest it, but...

BTW, when're we gonna get the next installment in l'ouvre d'micayetoca?

Hey, great song! Is that a real jew's harp you're twangin' on? That sounds really good.

Hey flapjax, you are right, it probably wasn't the best idea. I've been working too much, I guess. But the song is great, I like it a lot.

As for when is my next song coming: I'm trying to get the vocalist of my band to record the vocals for it, everything else is ready. It could be finished in the next few days, or sometime before the end of the decade, you know how it goes. I'll check the attic and see if I have anything posteable before the other one is ready. Thx for asking.

Cool mica!

sns: Yep, that's the real deal, twangin' away! I've got a bunch of these, they're from Thailand, or Cambodia, I'm not sure which. They sound good. Actually, everything in this track is "real", that is to say, no samples in use, it's all stuff I played: drum, shakers, jew's harp, cowbells, synth, etc. There's a dove call in there, too.

Ha, right on!

Well, I just recorded myself singing along with this. I think flapjax has kind of a Chris Isaaky quality going on that works a LOT better with the lyrics, though. My initial recordings didn't sound much like someone who would be ready to cash in her ticket to ride on that long black hearse... the story didn't sound true enough when I heard my voice sing it.

Fun to try though. ;)

You know, it shows. This song, with everything in the exact same place, only sampled, would lose a lot. I think that the fact that you used real instruments gave it a lot of force. Call me old fashioned, but I really think it makes a huge difference.

Oh man, I posted my comment without seeing that miss lynnster had replied. Wow. I'd still love to hear it with you, miss L. What do you say, flapjax, would you facilitate an instrumental version for her to sing on it? I might be totally off and it might not work, but it's worth a shot, innit?

Also, I just want to say this new type of exchange has been a lot of fun. I'm glad you two came around.

Yeah, mica, it's an actual conversation! On MeFi Music! Out of 40,000 members there may only be a tiny handful who visit and/or post to this little corner of Metafilter, but, hey, we're here, and we might as well make the best of it! Or, as I heard the bassist Dave Holland say at a solo gig of his that I was at years ago, (for which only a very small crowd had turned out): "We're not many, but we're strong!"

The instrumentation rules. It's what Remain in Light would have sounded like in the 1870's.

I agree. It's fun to have actual conversation! ;D

Speaking of which, if anyone you know is interested in having a page on resoldo to feature their music, please just let me know; I can give out invites. I posted resoldo on MefiProjects the other day... it's such a great idea, but so far most of our musician friends have been too lazy to get the ball rolling. We really need to get some word of mouth happening on it. It could be such a fun little project/community!

I'd be into resoldo. For two separate things, actually, my band, and one of the band members on his own, he is making great songs on his own and I really want EVERYONE to listen to him. Can you send me the invite? email's on the profile.
posted by micayetoca at 8:55 PM on January 16, 2007

Ok, check your e-mail for the invite. Let me know what you think of the site, if you have any questions or anything. We're still working the bugs out & stuff so we're really open to all feedback! You can invite your band member yourself after you get in. And hopefully he'll tell two friends... & so on & so on & so on...

This is spectacular.

This is a textbook example of how individual thin instruments can be married, mixed, and mired together to make a rich tapestry of sounds.

Fine job flapjax. Really.
