Chicago (Sufjan Stevens cover)

May 2, 2015 1:05 PM

Felt inspired to throw together a cover of an old favorite for the May/June challenge.

Not sure if this song is really "about" a city, but hey, it has one in the name. You get what you pay for. I'm seeing Sufjan live on Monday!

I'm usually a one-take-and-go kind of guy, and as you can probably hear, I reeeeeally don't know how to mix. or play. or sing. or record.

This is good! I like your singing voice a lot.

(Also kinda jinx on the challenge idea if the thing I'm hopefully doing with someone pans out...)

Really nice! I have a lot of fondness for that whole album, and this track's always gotten me in particular, but Sufjan's got such an intricate and controlled style of arrangement that hearing the songs taken out of that polished context and given a sort of streamlined, raw airing is actually really nice. Like pretentious illiterate said, it's a chance to hear it new again, which is wonderful.

This reminds me that I recorded a weird take on Carl Sandberg years ago that I guess I never actually posted on Music; I think I'll go dig that up.

Ditto on the raw, open feel stuff that cortex was saying. This is a rad cover. And I like the mix with the slight verb on the vocals. It's good listening.

Yeah very nice and warm.
Your voice sounds effortlessly natural.

Thanks all!! Your kind comments seriously made my week, as I am really insecure about musical stuff.

Love the pitch-bendy lead guitar twangs (ugh sorry can you tell I'm a keyboard player, what even are strings) and, especially, your vocal harmonies at the end.

(I totally feel you on the insecurity about putting musical stuff out for public consumption, but this is good and you should feel good.)
