Hard Rain

June 9, 2015 4:53 PM

A lonely cosmic country rock song loosely inspired by Neal Stephenson's Seveneves

Lyrics:

Tonight, the hard rain's gonna fall
I'm waiting on a mountaintop drinking alcohol
And thinking how the oxygen
Is going to burn off all my sins

I hope you brought enough to breathe
Seeds and water to make trees
I wish I had a tractor beam
So I could climb into your dreams

Tonight, I don't believe in stars
The moon is dust, the milky way is a candy bar
Your rocket arcs across the sky
Threading through the needle's eye

Before they hit, I jumped the cliff
I'm falling but it feels like lift
I press a message in the air
My dots and dashes melt away

Really nice flow. I love the atmospherics and the sleepy groove. Vocals are spot-on and the lyrics are compelling too. The sudden arrival of the growlin' guitar with the rocket is sharp and awakening. Outro has a great build and drop. Excellent all around.

Thanks so much - glad you liked it! I just got a new computer (the fan on my old laptop had gotten loud enough to make recording impossible) and switched from recording in Ableton (which I had used for a long time) to Logic and this is the first full song I've done in it. It's taken some adjustment, but the instruments and plugins it comes with are so amazing, including the Virtual Drummer feature - I tweaked the sound of the kit and twiddled some parameters to get dynamic shifts and variations in fills, but it basically spit out that great sleepy groove automatically.

Lovely mood to this. I really like the ending and the fade-out of the drums, very effective.

The laid-back vibe reminded me of Beck on Odelay.
