Thinking in Color

December 24, 2015 5:13 AM

A dashed-off not-quite-synthwave instrumental that rolls around for a bit but doesn't really go anywhere.

Was reminded of this track when I saw ludwig_van's (awesome, "real") synthwave post this morning.

Got a request from a publisher for "more like this" with a track of mine that they'd synched. Didn't see much money in it, so I whacked this one together real quick.

The drums are all 707 samples (I think) and the synths are either all Alchemy or Alchemy plus an ES-M or Massive patch. Man, I really, really love Alchemy.

This has a superb vibe. Really well mixed together and if this is "real quick" I'm jealous!

I've only gone wrist deep with Logic's Alchemy and need to seriously roll my sleeves up and get in there. I've barely made it through a sliver of the presets and mucked with the advanced settings and arpegiattor, it's intimidatingly robust.

My songs are mostly guitar based with synth accents, building pure synth songs like this is above my pay grade at the moment. Great work!

Thanks! I sort of like the vibe, too. The rolling and pulsing are what I like about this one.

But yeah, this is definitely a quick track. If you really break it down, it's a simple drum track and ... four or five synths maybe? The Alchemy presets are so rich and dynamic that you can really just stick an arpeggiator in front of them, tinkle a few notes or a chord, and just loop them over and over. The rest is figuring out when to bring things in and take them out. I could do three or four of these a day, easily, if it wouldn't make me want to never make music again.

Nah there's more to it than that - you've got the sparkles in here that make it do the brain-tingle thing. I think you should develop some of these :)
