Crashes The Intersections

February 14, 2017 2:39 AM

My wife and I are in a noisy surf punk band. We're called Skin Bugs. This is a track from our latest demo.

Recorded on a Tascam 244 with guitars and tube amps. Mixed down in garageband. Then stuffed into a tube and sent over the internetz to your earballs.

This is so completely awesome. Like if Sonic Youth were a surf band. Are there more members of Skin Bugs? Because I'd love to hear a full band take on this with rolling, pounding drums and such. Like no kidding, I'd buy this album.

That change right between 1:40 and 1:50 contains one of the strangest and most interesting transitions I have heard in a long time. So, the song starts with the guitars going back and forth, la la la, playing surfy ping-pong. But over the course of the first minute they both eventually resonate, the distortion kicks in, and they become as one, culminating in a final JUD-JUD JUD-JUD...

...and then they unpair and turn back into their original selves, like Transformers. Like nothing had just happened! Like the Young Marble Giants had just morphed into Shonen Knife and then poof! right back to Young Marble Giants.

And the way you make that transition with the descending chord that fits in yet isn't replicated anywhere else in the song... it's very prog-rock (if I dare say so). I keep listening to those ten seconds of the song. They are the best. This is the fun thing about an experimental surf band, that you can swerve and rev this ol' fin-tailed aquamarine whatever-fifties-car, but you swerve it with style and a wink.

I agree that you and your wife should fill this out with a full band, or multitrack yourself into one.

And yeah my wife and I tripped the fuck out when we worked out that intersection. We were just looking at each other thinking "what in the holy hell mash up up this?". The song's changes don't make sense, but it's so purposeful and it works in such a weird ass way that the insensibility is the most correct sense.

Basically our band is working on the concept of "If Ennio Morricone, JFA, Mr. Bungle, Danny Elfman, Augustus Pablo and Echo and the Bunneymen formed a super-group what would it sound like?"

This! Too bad you're in Austin-not-Boston otherwise I'd definitely see y'all play. You should post a gig in IRL when you do play. What's the name of the band?

JFA - that brings me back to 1987 reading Thrasher magazine.
