Manhattan Skyline
Some recent discussion on MeFi about the band a-ha reminded me that I'd recorded this acoustic cover of one of their songs a long time ago. This is actually based on an arrangement by Kings of Convenience, who made some interesting changes to the original song structure. Me on vocals and guitars (nylon-string and steel-string). Both Hands - cover (Ani DiFranco)
Acoustic guitar and voice. Pretty straight as far as my memory of the proper song goes. [more inside]
Angeline the Baker
Improvised acoustic guitar / singing. Recorded on phone.
A bluegrass standard, but I'm playing it as a stream of consciousness improvisation. Usually these days my playing is pretty much by the book, but here I was thinking about ecstatic / outside players like John Fahey and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
No patching in. Only one take. No overdubbing. Get it right in the moment. Be real and accept flaws as long as they don't spoil anything important. [more inside]
It's Not So Bad
An quickish acoustic one, with lyrics about my dad, his melanoma, and a couple of other things. Has probably the most acrobatic bridge bit I've ever done. [more inside]
Celebrated Summer
My 12-string and I take a fingerpicking stab at the Husker Du classic. [more inside]
Golden Ratio
You just want an excuse to dance.

This is the penultimate entry in a series of outtakes that did not make it onto the album "Damn Poets", to be released soon. (It is implied that the tracks on the album are superior to these outtakes. This is true.)
If you like my songs, I would very much appreciate if you'd consider leaving your email. You will not be spammed; you will be among the first to find out when Damn Poets drops.
Girl Stories
Them's The Pits
Philippine
There was once a girl, but that was long ago. A letter to a past love, recorded in one take with four microphones.

Pilot
Apologies for my absence — again.
I will be releasing an album under the moniker Kings Of Last Night this year, and I want to share with you an outtake, a B-side if you will, a sketch of a song that didn't make the album but deserves to be played on the internets.
That song is "Pilot", a story of aviation, extended metaphors, the fourth wall, and disaster.

Fear of Falling
By chance I just came across this recording I made over a year ago. The song is by the chronically underrated I Am Kloot.
Requiem for blink
On a sad day last spring, our benevolent dictator banned the tag from Metafilter. After a night of heavy drinking I woke up in a canoe in the Andes and composed this eulogy.
Monkey
At empyrean's request.
I needed a break from mixing my own songs anyway, so I threw together this quick & dirty cover of the Counting Crows song in 15 minutes, and uploaded it warts and all - one take off the top of my head, complete with missed notes, words, and chords. Enjoy.
Not For the Season
A cover of a song by Wilco or Loose Fur, depending on how you look at it. [more inside]
Hollywood - Zack Austin
Acoustic song about the American Dream.
Written and performed by Zack Austin.
Thanks for listening.
