October Challenge - Pantless
September 26, 2011 10:01 PM
To enshrine a fine music.mefi tradition, your challenge for October will be to record a track before you put your pants (or your gender-equivalent) on in the morning.
Basically I don't care how long it takes you or what you record but this challenge is going to be done in one sitting after you get up, and you are not getting dressed until it is done.
That is all, except that in future, challenge aside, all songs recorded without pants should also be tagged 'pantless'.
As a slight bonus, after a little discussion, we are going to hold the September ('uncool') challenge open for an additional month, and this challenge likewise. In other words, the challenges continue to be monthly but they will be held open for two months to allow more people to finish things they might have thought about or started (like me).
And a final heads up -- despite having had some really good suggestion for challenges I'm finding it very hard not to want to do a reprise of this challenge for November, mostly because of this, which frankly blew me away.

I think there will be special prizes for music recorded naked, or at least commando.

I'm a Scot. Everyone knows what our position is in the philosophical minefield that is the pants/kilts dialectic. I have little option therefore but to submit something that I've recorded with pants on.

I would say the majority of my acoustic demos have been pantless. I want a challenge whereby we are still asleep where we record.

Major, let's consider Scotsmen as a third sex for the purposes of this challenge, and you just insert your third-gender equivalent.

unSane, me old sweetheart, I formally invite you to repeat that statement at 10.30pm this Friday 30th September at The Saracen's Head at the Gallowgate in Glasgow. And may God have mercy on your pawky English soul.......

pawky English soul should read "puny". Pawky is far too flattering to describe a Sassunach...

Any mention of kilts reminds me of this photo of the Queen. 'Twas a proud day for that Highlander!

Oh yeah. BIG bonuses for videos this month.
It is my standard operating procedure to link to a video for just about every song I post to MeFiMu, but friends, this one will probably be an exception.
I know, I know: gonna be a lot of disappointed gals out there, but, hey, I'm happily married, so they weren't gonna get any anyway.
well... maybe I'll show some ankle

An interesting future twist on this challenge would be to mix military metaphors and record in guerrilla commando mode. This would involve, for instance, recording a bassline pantless in your local Walmart or from the top of Kilimanjaro or some other unlikely location. Your mother-in-law's sitting room would be a top location, scoring maximum danger points and high kudos. Similarly, breaking into Buckingham Palace, dropping your trolleys* and cracking off Purcell's Trumpet Voluntary whilst escaping arrest by assorted bobbies and footmen would probably earn you the status of "Grand MeFiMuMaster". Clearly, video evidence would be mandatory as would independent verification............I really do need stronger medication, don't I nurse...
*one of many, many English eupemisms for undercrackers. Shit, that's another one.

well, you could just do that in the saracen's head while the regulars were chasing unsane around for his comments on scots sexual identity - any guerrilla knows the worth of a good distraction
oh, it's too late, isn't it?

Ha! This is strange because that comment of mine was true, but meant the "in underwear" sense of "no pants." I mean, if I mean underwear I'd have said "pantsu ga nai" -- sorry for the bad Japanese flapjax, that's how the girls in Odawara used to say it anyway.
I've done every single track I have on MeFiMu in boxer shorts and no trousers or pants. Pretty much every comment or post that I've made on the blue outside of working hours has been no trousers too.

It's gong to take everything I have to not comment "NEEDS MORE FORESKIN" in all of the October tracks, FYI

unSane, I also think it is high time we bring back the "request a song from your favorite MeFi musicians" challenge.

"NEEDS MORE FORESKIN"
Anyone remember runout grooves? You know at the end of vinyl records. During the punk days there used to loads of weird and really funny stuff scratched into them - certainly in terms of UK releases, mostly 45's and more often on indie labels like Stiff. Reading Hoopo's comment made me instantly think "Now, that would have been brilliant scratched into the runout groove of something like "New Rose"..."

Hey sns - you could alternatively use an elastic band and pretend you're wearing a roll-neck sweater.....

Major, that's amazing. I think you just figured out the previously unknown etymology for Dickey, a faux rollneck or turtleneck sweater. Makes sense to me anyway.

I did this today, before going to work. The track was bouncing out of protools as I ran around the house putting on my clothes as quickly as possible to make a morning meeting. Nobody can say I'm not dedicated.
except me, 'cuz I'm not. but I'm easily amused.
I'll post it up tonight when I get home. It is short, it is meta, and I sound like an idiot. All boxes checked!

Either way, I approve of this challenge, and think it should be our new motto: MetaFilter Music: Making noise since before the dawn of pants.
