I Love Trash

January 23, 2016 1:05 AM

Song #2 in my Unu Kanto Po Semajno series, where I am attempting to record one song per week in 2016. This song represents the period of Jan 9 through Jan 22. (I'm already off by a week, but I'll catch up.)

The song was written by Jeff Moss, and performed by Caroll Spinney as Oscar The Grouch on Sesame Street. It was one of the first 45's I ever owned. This version owes a lot to Wild Man Fischer and Tom Waits, but doesn't stray too far from the original.

Lyrics:

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I have here a sneaker that's tattered and worn
It's all full of holes and the laces are torn
A gift from my mother the day I was born
I love it because it's trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I have here some newspaper thirteen months old
I wrapped fish inside it; it's smelly and cold
But I wouldn't trade it for a big pot o' gold!
I love it because it's trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love trash

I've a clock that won't work, and an old telephone
A broken umbrella, a rusty trombone
And I am delighted to call them my own!
I love them because they're trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty
Yes, I love, I love, I love trash!

A trashy effort for sure. Rusty trombone!
Well done.
I'm already off by a week, but I'll catch up
Ouch. Slippery slope. Let's hope.

Dead-on vocals!

Is that an accordion in the mix?

No, it's a harmonica. I'll break out the accordion sometime soon.

I grew up listening to this on one of the original Sesame Street LPs from the 1960s, but never realized until just now that this song is the spiritual sibling of Heathen Dan's "I Like" (or vice versa.)
