Do the Reich thing

February 18, 2010 12:35 AM

A lush electronic meets shoegaze(?) song influenced by a Steve Reich piece.

Made some time in 2008 by me and the other half of Junco. This song was influenced by a mefi post that ultimately sent me to this video. We tried to incorporate the tempo change in the main synth motif, but changed the tempo more aggressively than in the Reich piece. After a bit, the original synth motif is reversed.

I was digging through old ableton project files tonight, and rediscovered it.

I like the way this sounds. It makes me think of synth-bagpipes.

The drums are pretty neat, too, and it's exciting when they come in.

I do have to say that "Steve Reich" is really, really not the first thing I think of when I read the title of the song.

Made me long to hear the late, great Jaco Pastorius stretching out over this - it does have a Weather Report vibe. And I like Weather Report. A lot. Nice one ohj.

Which Reich piece?

What's the pad that first comes in behind the lead motif?

This is really well done. A lot of electronic stuff doesn't transform quickly enough for me, and I think more people could stand to take a page from Reich's generally good pacing in this genre.
