My Cirripedian Friends

July 4, 2010 3:54 AM

This is a song about drowning at sea, denial and adventure.

When you find me, down by the seaside
You won't recognize me,
Under all the barnacles and oysters.

Make up a story,
Of how I fought creatures vicious and wild,
Like sharks and giant squid,
Or how I cut valiantly through,
The belly of a hideous beast.
Somehow made it back to shore,
With my barnacle friends on my back.

Tell them of how,
I swam with a school of sirens,
Luring sailors and fishermen out to sea,
To the consternation of their wives and children,
But we always do,
Bring them back safely.

I like how there is a unexpected contrast (at least for me listening) between the subject matter of the lyrics, and the breathy, heartfelt, even a little twee delivery.

Also, the 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2 1-2 fingerpicked transitions are great. I was left wanting a whole bridge with that underlying rhythm.
