And He Cried

The spate of suicides by bullied gay teens has been weighing heavily on me; here's a song from my Celtic punk band The Peter O'Tooles on the subject.

LYRICS:

Moira said she wanted to go
To prom dressed in a tuxedo
And take her girlfriend Amy Brown
And the school board went and turned her down
Prom was held in Kilkenny Square
But Moira and Amy weren’t there
They dressed up in Moira’s home
And put on a CD and danced alone
And they cried and they cried
And they cried cry cry cry cry cried

Brandon he choked back his tears
And said I can’t stand four more years
He dropped out the next day
And he hitched a ride and ran away
He got as much distance as he could
He ended up in Hollywood
Sleeping on a squatted floor
And said he felt safer than before
And he cried and he cried
And he cried cry cry cry cry cried

Donny he was just 13
When the boys at school called him a queen
And cornered him outside shop class
And asked if he liked it up the ass
Donny had come out as gay
Donny said nothing and walked away
He hanged himself from a tree outside
In ICU Donny died
And he cried and he cried
And he cried cry cry cry cry cried

AZ, man, this is good. I'm glad I poked in here for a listen. It's got a familiar feel, somehow, although I can't quite put my finger on it.

I'd venture to say... Lou Reed. I think AZ was surely channeling Lou here, purposely. The vocal delivery style, the multiple-character storyline, the bass line and song form closely resembling "Walk on the Wild Side", etc.

Sounds good, AZ. I like the slightly off-kilter guitar (?) string noise panned to the right. Almost sounds like clanking tin cans. Nice texture.

It's always Lou Reed with me. In some ways, I see this as a prequel to Wild Side -- the stories of outsiders who have not yet moved away, or not yet found their community, and may never have that happen. Another borrowing from Reed is the use of two basses.

It took me a long time to come to friendly terms with Lou's music. I eventually figured out that what seemed (to me) to be flippant accounts of serious subject matter were...very meaningful. So, yea, this is pretty awesome. Good song, man.

This is very good. Could I also add that The Peter O'Tooles is a fantastic name for a band!
