Call in Sick

It snowed today.

More of a suggestion of a song, really. Had to make time for the snow.

How long should a song be? Long enough to reach the end. Hope you had fun in the snow; this was a nice little morsel to listen to.

Very cute, and short and sweet. I like this 50 second song idea: say what you need to and no more.

Yeah, I was kind of sure it was going to continue when it stopped. It definitely feels short, but one can play it again immediately after it stops and it works. Lovely song, uncleozzy.

Nothing wrong with a short song, though I agree that I wouldn't mind this one going on longer since it got my foot going and then my foot was all HEY, I'M TAPPING HERE, WHAT THE SHIT afterward.

I've been thinking for a while that it'd be interesting to take established songs and break them down to their core structural bits, sort of a process of compression that removes redundancy in form. One verse, one chorus, as a start—it seems like doing that to most songs would land you under a minute. Of course, my full idea involved killing even intra-sectional redundancies, so a verse that did like

"I IV vi iii, do that three times, then I IV V"

would end up cancelling out two of those three repetitions of the first chord sequence. A lot of songs would end up just TEENY.

Thanks, guys. I guess I should admit that it was supposed to have a second verse, but I just wound up cutting-and-pasting an ending instead. I kind of ran out of stuff to say.

I've always had a thing for short songs. They just make more sense to me. If I do manage to finish rpm this year, it'll likely be 15-20 songs under a minute. But it's not looking likely at this point.

And cortex, there are plenty of songs that would just about cease to exist if you did that to them: a measure of I, a measure of V, call it a day. It'd be sort of neat.

Short songs are awesome and this totally rules.

I love the harmonies and the melody (especially the rising "the things we would do if we weren't so old" line -- yeah! It's so optimistic, and then comes back to reality with the reading of the next line).

It sounds great, too, recording-wise.

"Turning boxes into sleds". Nice! So many good short songs on MuFi right now.
