Secret Book (Vocal Mix)
February 20, 2008 8:35 PM
This is a new version of Secret Book, of which I originally posted an instrumental version here. On the new mix, my wife Lori sings beautifully, and I wail a bit at the end.
I peeked inside your secret book
the one you tried to hide
where you confessed to all your crimes
I couldn't help but take a look
though I knew what I would find
would burn my eyes or strike me blind
I couldn't help but take a look
though I knew what I would find
would break my heart and blow my mind
Though I knew what I would find
would burn my eyes or strike me blind
I peeked inside your secret book
the one you tried to hide
the one you threw into the fire
I couldn't help but take a look
though I knew what I would find
would break my heart and blow my mind
I couldn't help but take a look
so imagine my surprise
that there was not a word inside
There was not a word inside
it broke my heart and blew my mind
(More on the origin and meaning of the song here.)

This is definitely going on the mp3 player as soon as I get it out of the car. She has a terrific voice.

I dig the song, but I'm having a hard time listening to the recording. The guitar-only track sounds great, pristine, but this mix sounds like you're hitting a compressor or limiter really, really hard. Maybe it's an effect you're looking for, but I'm not feeling it.

uncleozzy: then it's probably that i botched the mix--i kind of rushed this rough mix together late last night and didn't give it the kind of close scrutiny i usually do. i still haven't listened to it on a decent set of speakers, in fact... d'oh. i'll probably post another version to my blog once i get the kinks worked out. i won't waste any more mefi bandwidth with rough mixes of this track though.

I agree with uncleozzy, and I eagerly await the better version. As others have said, your wife has an excellent voice, and the song is very nice. I especially like the end; it's haunting! Thanks for this, Saul!

Oh, also, you say you won't waste any more Metafilter bandwidth with the song, but I really ask that you consider posting the polished version here anyway. If you only post it at your blog I, as well as many others, might miss it, and that would suck. I know I really want to add the polished, finished version to my playlist and I can't do that if its only at your blog, so again, please do post it here when you're done. Please.

That said, I feel like you could take out the second "though I knew what I would find / would burn my eyes or strike me blind" and just let the pretty instrumental make some noise.
