97
May 10, 2010 11:38 AM
Last night just before the kids went to bed, while I was dicking around on the piano and recording while my son played his drums, my daughter walked up with princess dress on and told me about a dream she had.
I started playing and singing a song around it, and the first verse I sung off the top of my head is the first verse you'll hear in this song, which I wrote and recorded on the spot for submission into SongFight's Nur Ein V less than two hours later (with no deadline time to spare) -- the title "97" and the use of a "guest" (in this case, my daughter) are both mandated by the contest.
Thankfully, this song replaced the half-assed and disappointing entry I'd submitted the day before (and which we shall never speak of again.)
Just me and my piano in one long unedited take, with a truncated version of my daughter telling me about the dream to open up.

Nice playing!
"She guessed that I would have to do / I said I love you too" -- oh, that's an excellent line.
What's Molly's verdict?

She's four. Her verdict was "Can I go in the backyard?"

Followup: Molly has banned this song from the house, because "it makes [her] sad and hurts [her] feelings." So now I am reserving it for when she goes away to college.

And now she is eleven, in middle school, and asked to hear it again. It made her cry, but she was laughing at the same time.
Perhaps I will update this over the years...
