Men's Retreat

May 27, 2015 12:54 PM

New recording of an old song with the following Garageband synths: "hip hop kit", "pop flute" and "shimmering harpsichord" (IIRC). Song about good friends who have, by now, all moved away. I'd love any thoughts on this.

With the rain falling so hard
It's hard to fall asleep.
I think of following you three.

If by this time next year
You all move away,
I don't think special part of me
Will stay.

Stay.

When you hop all your trains
and you come up from below,
I will drop every piece
Just to watch you go about my life
For a couple of days.
Just to watch you sleep in my bed.

I want to believe
You're visiting me.

When I wake up
It's another day,
And I won't feel
the way I used to.

This has a lovely sun kil moon vibe, but I found the cymbals distracting. Most of it is so distant and echoey, they break the mood for me. Just personal preference though - I really like the sparkly synth, and the guitar playing is lovely .

You know, I woke up with a similar thought as you, Greenish. I think I want to both take out almost all the cymbals as well as pull back the reverb a tad. Thanks for your feedback!

I mos def agree about the cymbals but I don't know that I want less reverb. I kind of want more reverb; I kind of want to slowly drown in tears of reverb.

I'm not a fan of the oh we've dropped this song on the floor section at 2:16-ish but it's up to you. I guess I don't get it. It's a lovely song though.

Thanks, Karlos. Interesting story about the "we've dropped this song on the floor" section: I recorded the guitar and vocals on one track with the same microphone, and there was some sort of glitch that caused the distortion. I liked how it ended right before the high singing part and decided to just run with it since I couldn't get rid of it (without rerecording of course). I might post a new edit here soon.
