Small Speakers

Something fairly new. This is two of us playing live, me on bass and singing, and synth and drum machine from Magnus.

This is something from a project we've been working on for a little more than a year. Various people have played with us. This recording is just the two of us, and recorded one take and live. We've since expanded again and included a guitar and keep on writing and playing. More to follow...

Lyrics for this:

Hard to stop the treble carrying,
Over fences sounds insincere,
Speaker cone that moved and flickered with high-hats and violins.

Hard to stop the light from spilling,
Projected image of filaments,
Piezo mic moves the prism,
Parquet dancefloor we'll forget.

Hard to stop the unforgiving,
Hard to ever leave this town,
Second gear's acceleration,
Engine's whine will do for now.

Until we've all.... etc etc. Repeat to fade.

Early part reminded me both of early Roxy Music and Beth Gibbons & Rustin' Man. The second part, the instrumental part, gets a nice slow driving repetition going, and then it starts sounding sorta like Robert Smith and Red Krayola. Mind you I should probably listen to more of all those bands, but I like your influences.

The song itself follows an interesting path: It starts out spare, and with the vocals very sure of themselves; then the instrumental groove kicks in; then the vocals sound unsteady and unsure of themselves, but still have a conviction to them. I think the fuzzy bass informs the third part, but the bass lines are really great all around; you get a really good groove going for the first two thirds of the song. And whereas the synth part is muted and subtle as well in the first two parts, it sounds like a bee was let out in the room in the third part, and that contributes to the kinda neurotic seasick feeling as well.

Anyway, thanks, I enjoyed it twice.

Thanks for the comment not_on_display. I'm going to listen again to some of those acts now!

I concur, a real Robert Smith vibe going on here, and I like the way the synth and bass build slowly.
