Another AO jam - this time using a cellular algorithm to derive a melody and a few drum triggers that I mess with and layer under some drones.

Patch notes - Teletype sequencing a piano sample, Serge subtractive voice, bass drum and gated noise; some drum fills from Marbles > Plaits and a nice Strega bass drone.

Whoa, what's the cellular algorithm you used here? It does seem really non-robotic.

Just 1-D binary cellular automata that is built into Teletype’s CHAOS operator as an “extra” function. It’s actually not super useful as a lot of the rules devolve in non-melodic ways so i stuck with rule 30 and added a function that occasionally just skips around within that rule for some additional texture. The number that results with each step in the rule is used to pull a note from a table, and specific bits of the number are used to trigger the drum voices and provide accents and other triggers.

Very cool

I've had that 1-D binary cellular automata tab open for weeks and have finally just read it. It never occurred to me that you could do it in a line like that before. That's awesome. I should try something with that.

I love this!

ignignokt, it’s actually taking a larger number (16 bit I think?) and stepping thru the rule that way. I can then grab pieces of the number (eg columns in the diagram) to trigger stuff or derive notes.
