When Green Leaves Spring (It's Good To See You)

This short (1:16) instrumental ditty is what happened when I started learning a new recording platform that came with loops of instruments I'd always wanted to play or include on my recordings: pedal steel guitar (I was super excited about this especially -- I've wanted to work with pedal steel for a really long time), baritone guitar, and mandolin. And did I mention the bossa drums? Not sure if I went overboard but I had fun and liked the result. [more inside]

Big red sky

It's been a while since I posted any of my new songs here. What do you think of my kind of new direction (and quality of the recording)? Alternative folk-ish, acoustic song with clean vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonies. Sounds happy but the lyrics are not. [more inside]

Black and White Rag

I've always known "Black and White" as a fiddle rag, but it turns out it was composed for piano in 1908. When I was a kid, it was one of about a dozen tunes my dad and I played together (over, and over, and over) with him on guitar and me on fiddle. In a total coincidence (no, really) my band decided to record it for our upcoming album “High on the Hog”. I never played it quite like that with my dad, but looking back it's fun to imagine I was practicing for this. [more inside]

Harvest Home

A day late for St. Patrick's Day, but here's an Irish tune. Not quite as triplet-y as you'd hear it from a bona fide Celtic player.

Tiny Tangled Trainwreck

I play mandolin and haven't written anything new in entirely too long. Today I remedied that while also facing my fear of writing/playing in the key of F.

Me and Al

This is a sketch of a work in progress. It started out as a simple cascade riff on the top three strings of the guitar and morphed into what appears to be an Irish fiddle lament. [more inside]

John & Tanya - Werewolf Night

This is from our JUST released album, The Story Is Everything. We're trying to beat a crazy deadline and sell 17 CDs before the end of the day tomorrow (Thursday, May 17). If we do it, we can bring physical discs to the Kerrville Folk Festival next weekend. Here's the link, should you happen to feel generous. Thanks for listening!

Nu Slang

As advertised, this Shins song changed my life. Now I sit around the house on Sundays recording wistful mandolin tracks on my computer instead of going outside. Thanks Shins!

Joshua's Lament

This was one of those late jam sessions that turned into an early morning song writing session. This melody originated to the sun coming up over the field in my back yard. Its reasons like this that make me thankful we always left a mic on record while we hung out. I'm on mandolin, my friend is playing guitar.
