Mystery at the Broken Robot Factory

Starting in my teens, I had a series of dreams about living in the ruins of a subterranean post-apocalyptic society. In one of these dreams, a friend convinced me that we should take over the old broken robot factory to see if we could get it up and running again. It has never been clear if this was a broken factory that made robots or a factory that made broken robots. [more inside]

Naturelle 2

I bought an old Steinway upright recently, on which I've been making pieces like this, which I call "naturelles." Three more naturelles on Bandcamp, here: https://raygull.bandcamp.com/album/naturelles-1-4 [more inside]

And the Sunlight Among the Trees

A short (1:27) original piece of me on solo piano. It's a reworking / different arrangement of a previous tune I posted, which was piano & guitar. This is a slightly different take on rhythm and melody -- more of a contemplative feeling, and still reflective and reassuring (I hope). Happy new year, MetaFilter! [more inside]

Does this belong in a movie?

There's a song with words and stuff that this was originally based on, but I like the instrumental version better. Mellow, textured, haunting, builds slowly. What do you think?

Thoughts in B-flat

In the past couple of weeks, I found myself going back to a piece that I'd started working on a few years ago -- probably because it's in a slower triple meter that's somewhat calming for me. This is a condensed one-minute version, featuring piano and guitar, for the 60 Seconds and Under #2 MeFi Music Challenge. [more inside]

Ruby Prelude

Piano solo. This opens none too gently at about 138bpm and covers a lot of territory inside three minutes. It should flow nicely into its companion piece, Turquoise Migration. [more inside]

Procession

I am aiming for "grand, yet subdued". I see all sorts of magnificent people and dignified creatures parading slowly by. [more inside]

Winter Song

A piano composition written a while ago at the end of autumn for the first snowfall. The changing of seasons; the coming winter; delight in the sounds of children playing in the fresh fallen snow. [more inside]

Nostalgia

This one has maybe the most tracks of any song I've ever made. [more inside]

Fruitbattery

A short piano solo! Minor key, triplet feel, maybe a little jazzy, better suited to Halloween than early spring, but what can I do? It's a free download at BandCamp complete with suitably batty artwork. [more inside]

The Mission

Whenever someone writes cross-genre, it always leaves you wondering what flavor their potpourri will take. When you see post-rock and shoegaze together, you might also have an idea of what you'll be hearing, but throw a piano in there, and you've caught everybody off kilter. That's what this song does, but nicely so. [more inside]

foot chase

Easy little piano/drum instrumental track that a friend and I recorded a few years back. I call it "foot chase" because for some reason it makes me imagine being on the run from someone.

Broken, soundtrack for the future.

Some more Philip Glass-inspired electronica while waiting for the RPM Challenge to start.

oslo nights

This is a quiet, meditative, minimalist instrumental piano piece, with occasional visits by vibes, fretless bass and lap steel guitar. You might want to play it somewhat loudly to hear some of the softer notes. Do you think it's finished, or should I add something? [more inside]

Overload

An abstract electronic piece; some of the piano riffs later through the song sound like they're being pushed too fast, which led me to the title. [more inside]

Chrono Trigger Suite for P80

Decided to whip out my slightly-more-old-school-than-usual electronic instrument for some nostalgia. Saddest theme, Memories of Green, and Ocean Palace Theme.

Circumference

Inspired by this post about playing pi to 1,000 places on the piano, I thought I'd print out the notes and see if I could improvise something a bit more musical (if cheesy).

Smackbillie

I was in Amsterdam in 1995 and found an old Billie Holiday bootleg CD. Years later I found an interesting sample on there and imported it into the totally awesome audio program....SoundEdit16. Stretched it, pulled it, squished it, doubled it and looped it. This is the end result in all of its 16bit glory. I originally released this under the name Skycraft. By "release" I mean I burned 10 copies in 1999 and gave it to Ray at The Quaker Goes Deaf in Chicago and a bunch of friends. 10 Blank CDs cost a lot back then.

a moment

An simple instrumental piece I've been meaning to finish up since 2003. MeFi music inspired me to get it done tonight. Enjoy.
