I would guess that many of you MefiMusicians are much like me - fast PC/Mac, DAW of choice (Pro Tools, Cubase, Sonar, Reaper, etc.), good interface, a couple of nice pre-amps plus a couple of nice mics (and some decent-ish monitors, but never quite getting round to doing the proper studio acoustics thing!) - recording yourself, collaborations and local bands. If so, and you like me are largely self-taught, the good old interwebs is a great resource for advice, reviews, technique, etc. I thought it would be a good idea to share some of the online resources that we all use, so here's my "starter for ten". I have listed the forums I use pretty much daily, plus also the websites I have grabbed some fantastic, free, impulse responses from. (If you haven't already tried using a convolution reverb yet I would definitely recommend it, I use the one bundled with Reaper, but there are several free VST convolution plug ins.) [more inside]

A follow up to the "Guilty Secrets" thread I guess. This one is basically "unsung heroes" - bands/artists that should have been more successful, long-lived or widely appreciated than they actually were. There is absolutely no purpose in this other than perhaps turning someone on to something good - even if just one person finds something they like that's a success! If I was IT savvy enough I'd make links to YouTube or the albums cited - but I have absolutely no idea how to do that because I'm an old git and, frankly, I just don't give a flying fuck! You know what's odd? When you post a song to MeFi, it says to "give a short, descriptive title" under the field where the song title goes. That's weird. Shouldn't it say, "put the name of your song here" or something? Or is it suggesting that song titles themselves should be short and descriptive? [more inside]

We've all got 'em......haven't we? You know.....bands/artists that are irredeemably uncool but which you secretly like? And, conversely, so-called cool bands that you either actively dislike or simply don't get what all the fuss is about. So to liven up what seems to be a rather quiet spell at MeFiMu I thought a "confessions"-style parlour game might be quite spendid (more tea Vicar?). Well, the August Challenge (Mefi Jingle) got a grand total of 8 submissions, which was less than I would've imagined. I had all sorts of good intentions to get at least one in myself, but alas, other commitments conspired against that. I'd actually envisioned doing one for each subsite (AskMe, Projects, etc) and I plan on doing that in the future, but without the mefimusicchallenge tag, I guess. Oh well... [more inside]

Sometimes I"m really surprised how accurately writing lyrics, one can capture your current emotion of existensial dillemma without any forthought or intention on the part of the Author. I mean these words that pop into my head, that alone seem quite meaningless, but eventually coalese into a concise summation of 'my lot' without a single conscious thought in that direction. Through a complex and all-but-inscrutable series of formulae and calculations, I have arrived at song assignments for the July Metafilter Music Challenge, which, as you probably all know, is to cover songs from The Velvet Underground & Nico. There were 35* interested participants from the original thread. With 11 songs comprising the album, we have 3 musicians for each tune, plus 2 extras, so two of the songs will get four cover treatments, if everyone comes through with their submission.
