Holy Crap, That's a Lot of Music!
Check it out: In four years & change, Metafilter Music has had over
5000 posts!
A nice round even number like that is clearly a omen that it's time to
post a collection of all the songs.
So, here's a torrent!*
It's kind of big - it weighs in at 4629 mp3s** & over 20 gigabytes.
This gathers everything from its opening in June 2006 through the end
of September 2010. [more inside]
An old chestnut......
Yup - another whinge about the charts. I know we've been here many times before but..... Should add that I have no wish to piss anyone off or start a fire (which is kind of oxymoronic innit?), but I think there is a genune issue here. [more inside]

"Give a short, descriptive title."
You know what's odd? When you post a song to MeFi, it says to "give a short, descriptive title" under the field where the song title goes. That's weird. Shouldn't it say, "put the name of your song here" or something? Or is it suggesting that song titles themselves should be short and descriptive? [more inside]

Monthly MeFiMu Challenge thread - Sept. 09 edition
Well, the August Challenge (Mefi Jingle) got a grand total of 8 submissions, which was less than I would've imagined. I had all sorts of good intentions to get at least one in myself, but alas, other commitments conspired against that. I'd actually envisioned doing one for each subsite (AskMe, Projects, etc) and I plan on doing that in the future, but without the mefimusicchallenge tag, I guess. Oh well... [more inside]

Monthly MeFiMu Challenge thread - August edition
So, here in my neck o' the woods it's already August 1, but many of you western hemisphere types still have a few hours to get your VU&N covers in under the deadline. I'm counting about 35 submissions in as of right now (with just a few hours left in the month!), which is, of course, below the number of folks who signed on, but, hey, that's life in the slow lane! I'm hoping for an avalanche of last-minute masterpieces. But meanwhile... on to the next! So without further ado... [more inside]
Future Challenge idea - MeFiMu jingle/ringtone
This meets my personal criteria for a good challenge - quick and fun. Only one rule - has to be less than 30 seconds duration. Thoughts? Comments?

You and the Velvet Underground and Nico: July MeFi Music Challenge
Through a complex and all-but-inscrutable series of formulae and calculations, I have arrived at song assignments for the July Metafilter Music Challenge, which, as you probably all know, is to cover songs from The Velvet Underground & Nico. There were 35* interested participants from the original thread. With 11 songs comprising the album, we have 3 musicians for each tune, plus 2 extras, so two of the songs will get four cover treatments, if everyone comes through with their submission. Artists' control of their output at Mefi Music
Forgive the double post, but I want to be sure that as many musicians as possible see the MetaTalk thread I just started. Also, with this post to Music Talk, I'm only knocking the "won't upload" thread off the front page here, so I think it's a pardonable sin.
Here's the MeTa thread.
I hope all of you with an opinion on my proposal will take the time to express it over there at MetaTalk. Thanks.
To: Lenny Cohen. From: MetaFilter with love.
Man, we really should compile all the Hallelujah covers together and try to get them to Leonard Cohen. [more inside]

Monthly MeFiMu Challenge thread - June edition
Thanks to everyone who submitted a tune for the May Challenge! Thirteen submissions came in, which ain't bad. If you have any thoughts, opinions, or points you'd like to make about last month's or this month's Challenges, please do so here. Also welcome in this thread (or directly as MeMail to yours truly): ideas for future Challenges. More ideas needed!
Covered to death?
I had an idea for a Challenge, but I wanted to ask for some help, and also to see if anyone else thinks it's a decent idea... I was thinking, how about a MeFiMu Challenge where we cover a song that's been covered a LOT? I mean, let's take one of the handful of songs that's just been covered in and out and up and down, around and about, by everybody and his sister. One that there just can't possibly be anything new any of us could do with it. Then, of course, we HAVE to do something new with it!

Monthly MeFiMu Challenge thread - May edition
Thanks to everyone who submitted a tune for the April Challenge! If you have any thoughts on it, points you'd like to make, whatever, feel free. Also welcome here: ideas for future Challenges. Also, I'll go ahead and post the May Challenges (two this month) here, and they'll also be in the usual spot very soon. Looking forward to hearing what everyone comes up with for this next round. Fire up the recorders!

One more month of Challenge Amnesty? Vote here.
The "amnesty month" idea (for March MeFiMu Challenge) got a pretty good reception, and there's been a fair number of submissions. But I'm thinking another month extension might be a good idea. I have a feeling some of y'all might go for that, and there's a hella lotta good Challenges from past months that are still crying out for some love.
But, I'd like to put it to a vote. All in favor, say "aye". All against, say "enormous flaming marsupials".
And please note that your humble MeFiMu Challenge coordinator will be in the woods, waaaaay offline, between March 29 and April 1 (and that's Japan time). When I'm back on the nets, I'll check in here, tally the results, and April will either be another amnesty month (which is, er, my vote) or we'll have some new Challenges. Okay? Let the voting begin.

Metafilter Music Collaboration #2 progress report
Some of you may remember this thread (from last April!) in which I suggested an Exquisite Corpse-style Massive Mefi Collaboration. This project has been inching along, in the background while most people were asleep, ever since. I am now done with the "collection" phase; this post is to remind any stragglers that were still thinking about wrapping anything up that the time to do that is now. [more inside]
I HAVE A THOUGHT
Actually, Karlos the Jackal has a thought, that he sent me in some MeMail. I think it's a GREAT idea, and I thought I'd reprint it here for everyone to read and kick around. Here's his letter:
What do you think about starting a thread in Music Talk about the current challenges at the beginnning of every month? People can share reactions to the new challenges, discuss what did and didn't work for them with the old ones, share ideas about possibilities for future challenges, etc. More good ideas might come up when people are kicking them around rather than trying to come up with stuff in a vacuum.
Added benefits: MeFiMu Talk would be more "active," and the thread would call more attention to the challenges.
Just thinkin'.

Favorite Song + Favorite MefiMuscian Willing to do a Cover = \m/ ROXXORZ \m/
(See this thread for context)
The basic idea is to request a specific MefiMusician to cover a specific song of your choice. Try to make a list of more than one to help spread the wealth. Discussion of exactly how this will actually work is going on in the thread linked above.
I thought I'd just get this thread open, at least. I only have one idea so far, so I'll wait until I think of some more before actually posting a list.
New Challenge idea from micayetoca
I've received an interesting suggestion for the Challenges that I think warrants a thread of its own, as it's something that is a little more involved, and we might want to figure out how to put into place. I think it's a pretty cool idea. The suggestion is from micayetoca, and I'll reprint the relevant portions of his mail here, cause I think this is something that could and should be discussed among all interested parties here at MeFiMu. He writes:
"How about opening a "requests" challenge, where any MefiMusician can sign up and say "I'm willing to take requests this month", collect people's requests for a month and then each musician that gets requests chooses which one he'll do? I know it has different levels and it requires a more active participation, but perhaps it could work. Whaddaya think?"
So, indeed, MeFi Musicians, whaddaya think?
Halloween lyric needs music
Halloween challenge lyric needs a tune. The music I wrote for this lyric came out sounding like it belongs to another song. So I am posting the words here in case someone wants to collaborate - there's still time to make the challence deadline. [more inside]
About this month's MeFiMu Challenge...
There were zero, yes, ZERO submissions for last month's Music Challenge. Why, heck, even yours truly didn't turn nuthin' in, and I generally don't miss a month. So... the current October Challenge is a little different: the NEW part is simply this: make something scary. A Halloween song of some sort, perhaps, like maybe a children-type scary song. Or just something incredibly frightening, like, say, a Carpenter's cover. And the OTHER part of the October Challenge is to choose one of the tragically neglected Challenge themes from LAST month. Cause, really, those weren't bad! I mean, cover a song in a language you don't speak? Man, I thought MeFiMusicians would be on that like white on rice! Not to mention the mashup Challenge, which should be fun and interesting, no?
Anyway, here's hoping that a few more Challenge tunes roll in over the course of this month. As always, don't forget to tag your submissions appropriately, and remember, keep your tape heads clean.
OK, that's all!

The Bitter with the Suite
Howdy y'all, and welcome to the new Music Talk page! The mods have come through big time for us here, and I'm just pleased as goddam PUNCH! Big thanks to all!
So, let me start with a question for you MeFi Musicians (and non-musicians, should there actually be one or two that stop by here). It's a 2-part invention question, actually: What do you think, so far, has been the BEST thing about MeFi Music, and what, up to now, has been the WORST thing about it? And, as a coda, feel free to add your suggestions about how to make it better and better from here on out.
