elevate

September 25, 2006 2:11 PM

A calm and smooth falsetto song with lyrics lifted from an emergency first aid poster (with some additions turning it into a love song). Features guitar, bass, piano, and electronica-style rhythmic vocal snippets.

Lyrics:

elevate. do no further harm.
i want you to elevate. do no further harm.
i need you to please don't bury
please don't bury in ice.

if consent is given, i'll love
if consent is given i will open the airways.

(attempt to ventilate)
(rapid pulse rate)
(keep lying down)
<-- which i mispronounce

Oh! I forgot to mention that, as with several of my other songs posted in the past, the bass was played by my Scottish bass man Riadsala (and edited by me to make it more mechanical). I'll shut up now.

Very pretty in a sad sort of way. Nicely done.

VERY well done. I'll expect to be hearing this on "Grey's Anatomy" soon. That's not a jibe. This song is great. I love how it came from a first aid poster.

This is great. I love the vocals in this song. How were they recorded/mixed?

Thanks for the kind words! The vocals were recorded with an SM-58 mic through my M-Audio Ozone USB audio interface. There is some EQ boosting going on in the mid-high spectrum and some cutting in the lower mids. It’s compressed, and I am also routing the lead vocal through a touch of a simulated guitar amp in Guitar Rig. In addition, there is some reverb/delay on it. Behind the lead vocal, in the background, I have the beginnings of most of the vocal phrases copied, and they loop to become a kind of ambient chorus, which is routed through a heavy reverb. It’s kind of subtle and low in the mix, but I think it adds a lot of ambience. This is the first track I have attempted to do anything like that.

Oh, and I forgot to say that there is also some autotune applied, to increase that somewhat mechanical feel.
