The New Folk Hero
Leave Her, Johnny
Another old sea song, harmonising with myself. [more inside]
Mingulay Boat Song
Trad. sea song, composed in the 1930s by Scots composer Hugh Roberton. I learnt it from a pirate band who used to play at the Maryland Renaissance Fair. [more inside]
Invocation
Electronics + Piano. Lots of harmonic and rhythmic drive.
It Don't Matter Who's First In Line
My golly, it's been years since I posted here! Shame on me. I miss the MeMu community. I recently released an album of kids' music, and thought I'd share a tune here. It's a classroom song about that age-old problem: cutting in line. [more inside]
Manhattan Skyline
Some recent discussion on MeFi about the band a-ha reminded me that I'd recorded this acoustic cover of one of their songs a long time ago. This is actually based on an arrangement by Kings of Convenience, who made some interesting changes to the original song structure. Me on vocals and guitars (nylon-string and steel-string). Strictly Germ-proof
17
This piano part and vocal melody have been rattling around in my brain for a while--finally wrote some lyrics and fleshed it out a bit.
And the Sunrise Welcomes You Home
A short instrumental piece (featuring synth) in which I basically have fun building from a loop. This is my entry for the MeFi Music challenge to submit music inspired by a MeFi post (I Saw This Thing On The Blue And...). Credit actually goes to three MetaFilter-related posts from last month: two MeFi posts by not_on_display and one MeFi Music post by ignignokt; they inspired me to create electronic music again after a decade+ hiatus. When the Curtains of Night
I'm happy to present my collaboration with not_on_display: this is our version of a neat little tune that was included in The American Songbag (a 1927 folk song collection by Carl Sandburg); the song there was itself derived from a late 19th-century song by William S. Hays. [more inside]
The Leaving of Liverpool
I had a great time collaborating with billiebee on a cover of this traditional folk song/sea shanty. The goal was to record a simple arrangement that was different from the more lively covers out there -- to borrow billiebee's phrase, a gentler version. I'm hoping our rendition highlights the lovely melody of the song. [more inside]
track 4
I'm doing a song-a-week thing with someone I knew in school, and this is what I came up with. [more inside]
insecure
Made in the Multitrack app by harmonicdog. I'm sorry about the wonky levels and general noisiness; I'm still learning how it works.
Mistake
Quick little ditty about dusting yourself off. [more inside]
Es ist ein' Ros' entsprungen
German, anonymous, probably 1500s. Still learning to harmonise using GarageBand. [more inside]
unSane's Whistling Shoes
I stole the words from unSane and turned it into a song with off key whistling.
Harpies at the Bar
This is a song about what a serial murderer might feel like after he's been at it for so long he can hardly stand it anymore. [more inside]
John & Tanya - Werewolf Night
This is from our JUST released album, The Story Is Everything. We're trying to beat a crazy deadline and sell 17 CDs before the end of the day tomorrow (Thursday, May 17). If we do it, we can bring physical discs to the Kerrville Folk Festival next weekend.
Here's the link, should you happen to feel generous. Thanks for listening!
Such Great Heights (cover)
I've always had a soft spot for this Postal Service song, so here's an acoustic cover featuring resonator guitar, pump organ, and ten copies of me. Lighters out for the last chorus, please.
More Than Anything
Experimenting with layering chords together in this short folky uke/guitar song. Also hoping the vocals blend well with the feel of this one. [more inside]
Ain't Too Proud to Beg
It's Valentine's Day, and I wanted to do a song about fighting against heartbreak. Naturally, I could not resist The Temptations. [more inside]
Steam Stove
This is a song from the batch I recorded when I recorded Cold Dip and It Could Always Be Early. It has an absolutely ludicrous number of tracks for a song that has nothing but guitars and harmony, and I feel the need to just release it and see how others react to it. [more inside]
Can the Hive Mind help me with this riff?
I wrote this simple little Mellotron piano chord progression this morning but it's baffling me. Can anyone suggest how I get it to loop back around to the beginning again? [more inside]
Ten Years in a Hundred Dollar Suit (vox up)
I pushed the vocal track a couple of dB on this track I posted yesterday as several people suggested. See what you think. [more inside]
Simple Town (Full Version)
Feisty powerpop version of the a capella song I posted for the challenge. Man, this was another freakin' difficult song to mix, not least because it was the first one I did on my Yamaha HS50m monitors which Chococat recommended. You know when you go to the bathroom in the middle of the night in a hotel and accidentally turn on the overhead fluorescents and catch yourself stark naked in the most unflattering, pore-revealing detail and sort of gasp in horror? These speakers are like that. You fight them every inch of the way, not trying to get the song sounding good, but just to stop it sound so goddamn bad. [more inside]
If I Fell
A boy/girl take on the Hard Day's Night track. [more inside]
Simple Town
A piece of pop fluff for the a capella challenge. [more inside]
You & San Francisco -- Big Hair Mix feat. Major Dundee
At long last, the remix of Y&SF with new vocals and Major Dundee's guitar work incorporated. [more inside]
Far
Another uke-y croon, mellow and heartfelt. [more inside]
Summer's Calling
This is the second of two summersongs... this one is my attempt to shake off the summertime blues and write something genuinely hopeful, complete with a spoken intro and healthy helpings of cheese and bubblegum all round. [more inside]
South
My girlfriend was having a bad day, so in about an hour, I wrote and recorded a song in an attempt to cheer her up. Why not share it?
Don't Fool Me
Full on vocal harmony twin electric 12-string assault, my attempt to collide the Monkees with the Byrds with a side of the Go-Betweens. [more inside]
Where you gonna get your good things now?
One of my favorite chord progressions ever. A demo from about 1995 for a notional solo album, and for once I sound like I'm actually worked up about something, which I was. [more inside]
Where you are
This is a quick little tune about a few people I'll never meet. [more inside]
Not So Kind
A very short little song wherein I take the harshly honest route toward an old friend. [more inside]
Walkabout (Atlas Sound cover)
In which I decide to stop candy butt-ing around it, and attempt to join the reverb drenched, echo cave sound of today. This doesn't really sound like anything I've done before, so I'd love to hear a couple reactions. [more inside]
XXIV
Adapted from a poem by James Joyce, from his collection "Chamber Music." [more inside]
Shades of Grey
It's about m7 chords and singing words. Words about shades of grey. and colors. Other words are used in the song.
That's Right
A naughtybilly song from the Dirty Curls about one of the classic themes of pop music: cousin on cousin incest. [more inside]
Enemies
Young people questioning morally ambiguous, age-old disputes. Singing about it...through me. Also about hot fudge. Yum. YUM.
Kalimba Take 2
kalimba + toilet time = this song
the lyrics, on the other hand, are about getting hitched to my amazing S.O. [more inside]
The Money Rolls In
A rewrite of a traditional bawdy song about an untoward way to make money. [more inside]
Angry Fatso
An uptempo, harmony-laden poppy number about a short-tempered, rotund gentleman who seems to be everywhere I go.
Open My Ears
A verse from the AVB song Open My Heart (or at least as best as I could remember it) [more inside]
Silver Dollar
Bluegrass song about what sometimes happens with sons and dads. (In a bluegrass/country world.)
[more inside]
The Lift
Another Sauna Song. Recorded at 4 this morning, and actually sounds more like it was recorded outside than my last song, even though this one wasn't at all. In drop D, but tuned down a whole step. [more inside]
When You're Out of My Mind
A nice little love song, for iterations of "little" that involve a six minute runtime. [more inside]
All Day Long
Very short and perhaps sweet. I've been working on this kind of music for a while and this is a good example of where I'm at with it right now.
Two Chord Challenge!!!
ENJOY! [more inside]
You're Not Alone
My contribution to the two-chord challenge. A sleepy little song with fingerpickin' guitar, piano, and some three part "harmony." I experiment a little more with my voice on this one. [more inside]
You Homo-Loving Commie Sons of Guns
Inspired words of actor Sean Penn, Sailor Martin sings a very short song of social change, accompanies by ukulele, harmonica, jew's harp, and tambourine. Entry 11 in the RPM challenge. [more inside]
