The Let Go
Another request from my three-year-old grandson, this is Elle King's "The Let Go." Video.
This moving song by Mary Gauthier is one of my favorites. Everyone needs mercy. Video.
The End of the World
Music: Arthur Kent Lyrics: Sylvia Dee Originally Recorded by: Skeeter Davis [more inside]
Hey It's Okay cover
I've been playing with armoured-ant's excellent Hey It's Okay, and I liked this little short version.
Some recent discussion on MeFi about the band a-ha reminded me that I'd recorded this acoustic cover of one of their songs a long time ago. This is actually based on an arrangement by Kings of Convenience, who made some interesting changes to the original song structure. Me on vocals and guitars (nylon-string and steel-string). [more inside]
Both Hands - cover (Ani DiFranco)
Acoustic guitar and voice. Pretty straight as far as my memory of the proper song goes. [more inside]
When the Curtains of Night
I'm happy to present my collaboration with not_on_display: this is our version of a neat little tune that was included in The American Songbag (a 1927 folk song collection by Carl Sandburg); the song there was itself derived from a late 19th-century song by William S. Hays. [more inside]
The Leaving of Liverpool
I had a great time collaborating with billiebee on a cover of this traditional folk song/sea shanty. The goal was to record a simple arrangement that was different from the more lively covers out there -- to borrow billiebee's phrase, a gentler version. I'm hoping our rendition highlights the lovely melody of the song. [more inside]
Worry About The World (cover/mashup)
This is a cover of a song my dad wrote (that I actually found via combing through his post history on Metafilter after he died) [more inside]
A cover of the MGMT song. Just me on vocals, guitar, and bass. Inspired by a recording I have of Ben Lee playing this song live. [more inside]
Kitten (in my robot purse) cover
Coming late to this great mefimusic challenge. So many I still want to cover, but here's my noir version of umbú's excellent Kitten (in my robot purse), a song that packs way more adorable and awesome into less than three minutes than should feasibly fit. Hope I'm doing it justice. [more inside]
stayin in touch
A song written by my brother, who recently came home from a two year Senegal Peace Corp stint. To paraphrase his contention: "If you want to catch up, put your phone down and take your pants off." [more inside]
Request: "I have long wished for a happy, loud, upbeat version of The Beatles 'Michelle.'" [more inside]
Climbing Up the Walls
Only three tracks left until we've finally finished the full album of OK Computer. The idea here is pretty simple--since we've made basically every other track super creepy, it was time to make the creepiest track on the album something completely different. Presenting rock and/or roll. [more inside]
Heroes (rough mix)
My Kaossilator and I take the Bowie classic to strange places [more inside]
Another cover. I'm really sorry about the clipping at the end! [more inside]
Keep Your Hands to Yourself (Sketch 1) (Georgia Satellites cover)
I've been kicking around the idea doing a cover of this song for years now. Finally, I'm getting around to laying down sketches. [more inside]
Bad Romance & Pisgah
For Valentine's Day, 2012, a ragtime arrangement of two unlikely bedfellows: Lady Gaga's Bad Romance and the 1817 JC Lowry tune Pisgah (58 in The Sacred Harp). [more inside]
True love will find you in the end
Cover of the oft-covered song by the un-coverable Daniel Johnston. Main track recorded in my dorm bathroom in the winter of 2009 by drumming a banjolele with a pencil.
Just what the world needs: another cover of a hit pop song by a white guy with his guitar. [more inside]
All The Small Things
I seem unable to cover songs (even those I hate) without making them sound completely earnest.
Acoustic guitar cover of the Lady Gaga song. [more inside]
If I Had To Do It All Over Again,
Baby I'd Do It All Over You. [more inside]
Leave Her, Johnny
Here is an entry for the January Challenge! It is by me and rangefinder 1.4. It is a cover of "Leave Her, Johnny," a traditional sea shanty that was sung by sailors at the end of a voyage, as they were preparing to leave their ship ("her" in the song). [more inside]
Boots Of Spanish Leather
Another "get me out of this musical funk" cover. The more I hear Dylan sing this, the more I think this may be his most beautiful song. Here's my try. [more inside]
The Card Cheat
I've had a bit of Clash fever lately, and a Kaossilator that I'm playing with. [more inside]
God Only Knows
Just something we did for fun this weekend. I can only take credit for the singing and half of the snaps.
My acoustic cover of the Mefi favourite by Ke$ha.
When I'm in a prolonged songwriting funk - which I am now - it can sometime take a cover of a favorite tune to snap me out of it. Let's hope this does. [more inside]
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
Cover of the Ewan McColl classic, at the original speed for once. So I know covering a classic like this is pretty dumb -- how you gonna compete with Johnny Cash, Peggy Seeger and Roberta Flack? But I was really curious about something I read, so I wanted to try an experiment. [more inside]
Eyeless (Slipknot cover)
This is what Slipknot would sound like if they were only one guy in his bedroom and didn't yell so much.
Memo To My Son
I love Randy Newman. Along with the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, and Cat Stevens, he was the first musician I fell in love with as a child, thanks to my parents. I've covered him once before on MeFi. Now I'm doing it again. [more inside]
I was hiking in the Pyrenees the other day. Lovely weather, but I was in a bad mood. I felt sad. [more inside]
run to you (bryan adams cover)
No, seriously. Just for fun, I decided to do this cover song to test out some drum stuff. Thought I'd share this while I work on some new songs...
There She Goes Again
My submission to the Music Challenge, July 2009 edition. Advice to the lovelorn john from Uncle Lou. [more inside]
Run Run Run
My Velvet Underground homework. There's some backing falsetto in here and some piano and stuff. [more inside]
A largely pointless endeavor, a rendition of Hallelujah with quick fingerpicking and banjos (what's new?).
This is the soundtrack to a movie about Leonard Cohen going on a rafting trip in rural Appalachia. [more inside]
Together - Jazzed
You liked Together - now hear the cover, jazzed up. Short lively instrumental cover of my own work. Vanity at its best.
Cover: One More Time
Acoustic guitar instrumental cover of a very popular song, I won't mention the artist, perhaps a commenter can spill the beans :) Recorded in two parts.
Everywhere With Helicopter (feat. jessamyn; Guided By Voices cover)
So, what was it, November when the MeFi Challenge was unofficially "requests for covers from other MeFites"? But this goes even further back... sometime last summer, Jessamyn said she wanted to do a cover--with me!--of Guided By Voices' "Everywhere With Helicopter." "OK," I said, "but you have to sing and make jangly noises with things around your apartment." [more inside]
Cover: The Rose
Instrumental guitar cover of The Rose by Bette Middler. Done in one take, as its recorded with just one guitar line theres been a few compromises with the melody. Also a few dud notes but every time I tried to re record it the cats kept getting in the way! Perfect for Mothers Day which is coming up here in Australia.
Cover - Book of Love - Peter Gabriel
This is an instrumental cover of The Book of Love by Peter Gabriel - I think this originally appeared at the end of a movie starring J Lo and Richard Gere called Shall We Dance Recorded for a friends wedding for the bride to walk down the aisle to. Hope its enjoyed by all
Going Down to Die
A Danzig cover (aahh!) I used to love the early Danzig albums back in high school. Three or four months ago I had a nice night and must have remembered the band because I woke up with this. It has since been remastered several times ( took out a lot of bass on the guitar ) and many attempts to post have been made (some nights you just can't figure out LAME). Like everything else I seem to have thrown together so far, it's one take on guitar (with vocals from that take bleeding in) and then one for vocals which were doubled. I added some shit in the left at a couple places.
The Accursed Hat, Version II
A rendition of Jofus' brilliant cowboy epic. [more inside]
Poison Ivy League (Elvis Presley cover)
At micayetoca's request, here is my take on Elvis Presley's Poison Ivy League. As a special bonus, here's me playing ukulele!
i will (radiohead cover)
Spur-of-the-moment lo-fi live cover of the Radiohead song off Hail to the Thief, to which I added a couple of equally rough overdubs and some reverb. The guitar is out of tune and poorly played, but the vocal melody tweaks are kind of fun. [more inside]
