Eleanor Rigby

I've was in a bit of a Beatles mood last weekend, and recorded this as well as my previous post of "And Your Bird Can Sing". It's been fun to redo the songs with my arsenal of sampled orchestra, etc. I'm not the greatest singer, but I've learned a lot listening to the original, and working with my own voice.

I Don't Want to be Here

Recorded back in '01 for the Chalkhills.org King For a Day XTC tribute compilation CD. Written by Andy Partridge, but never recorded by XTC. This was a one-off project, but eventually led to the formation of my XTC tribute band, and we played it live once or twice. [more inside]

Playground

Recorded live to 24-track digital at our most recent show. My band The Dukes of Simpleton is an XTC tribute project, so no we didn't write it, but I'm pretty sure we're the only people playing any XTC songs live in a 1000 mile radius. [more inside]

Reno Dakota

A Magnetic Fields cover I recorded recently. I've been working on my singing for a while, and I was mostly wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to go from here in improving it? Any other feedback is also welcome, of course.

Twist and Shout [The Beatles]

Continuing with the theme from yesterday, (and as promised), here's my version of "Twist and Shout." Is it any good? That's for you to decide. I hope it is. Perhaps "I'll Get You" is next?

Hold Me Tight [The Beatles]

In hono(u)r of the anniversary of the nucleus of the Beatles coming together, I bring you a cover of a song that both Lennon and McCartney derided as not all that good, but I always kinda liked. Maybe tomorrow, I'll upload my version of "Twist and Shout." :-)

crazy

A cover of the first verse and chorus of the Gnarls Barkley song, primitively recorded live a while back when I had a cold. My wife was really into the song and I recorded this for her as a goof, but it came out kinda good.

Ana Ng (acoustic)

This is an acoustic cover of the wonderful TMBG song Ana Ng, done on a four track recorder many years ago. Though I did once see "I don't want the world, I just want your half" painted on a bridge (it was really surprising and cool to discover), we substituted "Homies '88" in its place because we had recently seen that on a bridge and thought it a bit absurd that someone took the time and effort to paint such a doofy message.

Welcome to the Jungle (acoustic)

This is an acoustic cover of the very excellent They Might Be Giants song Welcome to the Jungle. As a gag, the beginning instrumental bit copies the Guns N' Roses song Welcome to the Jungle. Though my old "band" did this, just about every instrument on this track (including the backup vocals) was done by one bandmember.
