When Green Leaves Spring (It's Good To See You)
This short (1:16) instrumental ditty is what happened when I started learning a new recording platform that came with loops of instruments I'd always wanted to play or include on my recordings: pedal steel guitar (I was super excited about this especially -- I've wanted to work with pedal steel for a really long time), baritone guitar, and mandolin. And did I mention the bossa drums? Not sure if I went overboard but I had fun and liked the result. [more inside]

The Bone Church
I'm working on a set of songs/sounscapes for a friend's online comic project. This is a spooky ambient piece using some recordings I made of a guy moving chairs around in a cathedral in Vienna, some sleep breathing, some musical saw, and a weird broken African instrument a friend gave me.
Caffeine Fangs
A creeping tune the style of Melody Nelson era Serge Gainsbourg. Darcy Hancock from the Vancouver band Ladyhawk lends a squalling guitar solo.
Back to You
Somewhat reminiscent of Sonic Youth's cover of the Carpenters' "Superstar", this song still seems to have a unique quality all of its own. When we recorded this Ummagma track, we didn't know about that cover but since then, this has been the feedback received and we also feel a similarity there too. What do you think? Just sneaking this one under the wire for the Hallowe'en challenge. A thrown-together palate cleanser from the recent power pop -- a piece of Eastern European-flavored surf about the scariest thing I can think of. I actually gave myself the shivers when I was putting together the ending so it's probably worth sticking around for that. [more inside]

This is a cover (gah, feels like all I can do lately) of "My Roots are Strong and Deep" by the Microphones. Features my friend Taylor Bridges on heavily distorted banjo, and recorded in this wonderful, cement stairwell back at the school I used to attend. Anyone know of good, secluded, reverby spots in Portland, OR? The sort where people generally won't walk by, but if they do they won't snicker?
Dead Man's Will (Iron & Wine cover)
A cover, but unfortunately not a cover of Vogue by Madonna for the monthly challenge. This is the result of me trying to really know what I am doing with a song before I record, instead of just recording with a "I'll fix that later" approach and piling on more and more tracks. So this is one track, recorded on a USB mic in a pretty stairwell on my college's campus. I'm still stuck on the BbGCFABb tuning. I'd absolutely love any thoughts.

Long Night and Nothing to Do
I wrote this song in one night for a school assignment that was due the next day. The music was really just flowing out of me. I don't even remember writing most of this because I was so tired. It was created to be a score for a 9-minute short film that I made, but it's grown on me so much that I've decided to include it on my first album.
It does need some work, though: the mixing is way off in some areas (and even distorted) and it's way too long to include on an album.
Glow
I made this song last summer (2006). It has the usual synth and drum machine, as well as the addition of a little guitar. Very fast-paced, yet relaxed. Oh, and, of course, it'll someday (maybe) have lyrics.
Aware
Very atmospheric.
This song will always remind me Christmas, as I wrote most of it during the month of December. Just like my previous track, this will also have vocals someday.
