Kids
A cover of the MGMT song. Just me on vocals, guitar, and bass. Inspired by a recording I have of Ben Lee playing this song live. [more inside]
Fairytale of New York
It's almost December, so it's time for this classic holiday song, originally by the Pogues with Kirsty MacColl! [more inside]
O-o-h Child
A cover of the classic Five Stairsteps song, put together last week by a bunch of us around the country via Facebook, Dropbox, etc. [more inside]
Don't Call Me Baby
Cover of a 1980s song by Voice of the Beehive. This is for a project on Facebook where we do songs based on a theme each week. This theme was "songs with the word 'me' in the title." [more inside]
Love Cats
So I'm in this music challenge group on Facebook, where this week's challenge theme is "cats and dogs." [more inside]
Christmas
"Christmas," written by Florence Dore, and also recorded by Fuzzy and the Posies. It's not a Christmas song -- or if it is, it's one of the bleakest. This cover is by me and my iPad. [more inside]
Gotta Get A Message to You
I thought I had uploaded this 1998 live living room recording but I guess not. Yet another example of my old band's Bee Gees fixation. [more inside]
Earlier Than Expected
This is a Posies cover a few of us did for a Dear 23 list (Posies fan list) compilation in the late 1990s. Personnel: Me, vocal and maybe guitar; Chris Otto, background vocal, guitar, autoharp; Terri Doherty: bass. [more inside]
Spite and Malice
To celebrate my 12th MetaFilter Birthday (a few days early, but so what?): a song recorded in late 1991. It's a cover of one of my favorite Posies b-sides from way back when. [more inside]
Marie Provost
Cover of the Nick Lowe song. I just found a CD with a bunch of 1998 recordings, including this one. [more inside]
That Letter
To celebrate my 7th MetaFilter Birthday (yay!) here is another track from the band I was in in 1991. This is a cover of a Young Fresh Fellows song. It's a little rough. There's another thing we cover during the intro part before I start singing -- see if you recognize it.
Fascination Rap
Oh, will I ever regret this one. A couple of years ago in AskMeFi, I referred to a joke version of "Rapper's Delight" I once did, combined with the riff from the Cure's "Fascination Street". This is that very "rap". It is very rough -- we just did it as a joke for Halloween 1991, and we practiced it... maybe... once. (You know those goofy things you come up with in practice that crack you up but should never be played in public? Yeah.) So there are lots of screw-ups in the recording. Lots. But it was a huge hit with our friends, and so for the remainder of that band's short life, we had to play it at every gig. Unfortunately, it was only recorded the first time we played it. Recording notes: this was recorded by someone in the audience on a boombox, but it's not bad considering that. Definitely not high fidelity, though! Also, there's some talking for a minute at the beginning of the track. Despite everything, I think it's kind of fun. But painful. Definitely painful. "Enjoy."
(can you believe we were totally sober when we did this?)
Out of Luck
Garagey powerpoppy cover of a song by the Pointed Sticks. Recorded almost exactly 15 years ago by the band I was in at the time, NOT!. (That's the band name. Not a comment on whether we recorded the song. Yes, we had seen Wayne's World. I'm sorry.) There are some glitches that are on the original tape. I'm singing lead and harmony. I might be playing some rhythm guitar. This was our rowdy set closer, and lots of fun.
New York Mining Disaster 1941
Acoustic cover, me and Chris Otto sharing vocals. Living room demo on Tascam 4-track tape deck, recorded around 8 years ago or so. A song I've always loved to sing. Sorry the last couple of seconds are clipped off; I'm not sure why.
Mrs. Green
Semi-acoustic cover of "Mrs. Green" by the power pop band the Posies. This was done by a 3 piece band (two guitars, one bass) group I was in a while back. (We never could find a drummer, so...) I'm singing lead and also a back up part near the end. The other band members are Chris Otto and Terri Doherty. Chris did lead guitar, backing vocals, and some keys. Terri played bass. I think I did some random percussion and guitar strumming as well. (Please delete when/if covers are determined to be a problem here.)
