Don't Play Cards With Satan (D.Johnston)
Took a look at this month's challenge themes and thought: Tom Waits does a much better Tom Waits impersonation than I could ever muster, and I'm just not a 'lots of notes' kinda guy. But, "spooky"... there you go! Submitted for your listening pleasure, my version of this Daniel Johnston song. With lines like "I saw my own heart laying, black with blood", I guess you could say it's pretty damn spooky. Here's a very powerful clip of Johnston performing the song on organ. [more inside]
Skin and Bones
Cover of a kid's song. [more inside]
For Reverend Green
A simple cover of a song from Animal Collective's newest album, which MetaFilter greeted with a great deal of enthusiasm.
I was kind of reluctant to upload this one, because there are some things about the singing that I don't like (mostly timing and range), but I'm curious to hear what you guys think of it.
Thank You
Yes, that one, by Alanis Morisette. I had a more airy, spacey take on it. [more inside]
hungry heart
This is a lazy pseudo-live cover of the Bruce Springsteen song, recorded on a whim a couple of years ago.
Reno Dakota
A Magnetic Fields cover I recorded recently. I've been working on my singing for a while, and I was mostly wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to go from here in improving it? Any other feedback is also welcome, of course.
Femme Fatale
A Velvet Underground cover from our recent recording session
I Am John
Say gnfti, how's your falsetto doing? Why, I'm glad you ask! Here's a Loney, dear cover.
Chrono Trigger Suite for P80
Decided to whip out my slightly-more-old-school-than-usual electronic instrument for some nostalgia. Saddest theme, Memories of Green, and Ocean Palace Theme.
Old Man
A cover of my very favorite Randy Newman song, which is also maybe the saddest song I know.
波動 (Hadou/Undulation)
A cover of a song by AJICO. I'm still learning how to record vocals on Cakewalk SONAR, and I'm nowhere near UA.
Twist and Shout [The Beatles]
Continuing with the theme from yesterday, (and as promised), here's my version of "Twist and Shout." Is it any good? That's for you to decide. I hope it is.
Perhaps "I'll Get You" is next?
Hold Me Tight [The Beatles]
In hono(u)r of the anniversary of the nucleus of the Beatles coming together, I bring you a cover of a song that both Lennon and McCartney derided as not all that good, but I always kinda liked. Maybe tomorrow, I'll upload my version of "Twist and Shout." :-)
I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
A cover of one of my favorite songs
Only Listened One Time
This song is not actually a cover of any actual song, even though it pretends to be for reasons that will become obvious when you listen to it.
Sinaloan Milk Snake Song
A lo-fi cover of a lo-fi song by the Mountain Goats, from Zopilote Machine. Made in GarageBand, vocals recorded with built-in mike. I'm brand-new at this, so I welcome technical advice about how the mixing, recording, use of loops, etc. can be improved.
Barley & Grape Rag
A cover of the Rory Gallagher track. I decided to learn this tune instead of doing some proper work today. I think I definitely need to find where I put that pop shield....
Moving Pictures
buriednexttoyou filter: last September, he posted a demo of his song, Moving Pictures. I immediately fell in love with it, and recently decided to make a cover of it. I asked him if he wouldn't mind, and he didn't, so here it is. He is got serious talent, and If you are one of those who loves finding great new music, good surprises await you at his site.
Blackout (John Scofield cover)
Just me and my friends making music in the basement. This is a live studio cover of John Scofield's Blackout.
When We Sleep
A cover of one of my favorite songs about tornadoes, originally by Butterglory.
Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out (Guthrie cover)
Old Woody Guthrie tune that's probably been covered a couple hundred times. This is me breaking in our new upright bass.
Sea Of Love
Here is an oldie but goodie. Originally recorded in 1959 by Phil Phillips, Sea of Love has been covered by many over the years. This is my take on it that I recorded for my girlfriend as a birthday present a few weeks ago. Short and sweet.
rabo de nube
Actually this song is not my own. I was just wondering... may I point to a beautiful song by providing my own rendition here ? It was written by Silvio Rodriguez.
White Lines (a cappella)
These are the sort of things that occur to me as I go for my daily walk. Four-and-five-part harmony plus solo, bass and vocal percussion. Recorded in GarageBand using my MacBook's built-in mic.
crazy
A cover of the first verse and chorus of the Gnarls Barkley song, primitively recorded live a while back when I had a cold. My wife was really into the song and I recorded this for her as a goof, but it came out kinda good.
The Second Longest Night
Previously on MeFi: Novelist Jonathan Lethem wrote several songs for musicians to do with as they wished. One song made me want to try to channel my inner Daryl Hall or "Goodbye Cruel World"-era Elvis Costello.

Sgt. Pepper 2.0
A parody of A Day in the Life, penned earlier today by the highly overrated gentleman known as It's Raining Florence Henderson in response to disturbing revelations. Apologies to John. Paul can stuff it.
The Model
I've been out of the game for a while, so I thought I'd warm up by covering the Kraftwerk classic acoustically. I thought I'd try some alliteration aswell...
Shape of My Heart
This is a cover of The Backstreet Boys' Shape of my Heart, done with only banjo and voice. I recorded it for a weekly covers contest that a few friends and I came up with. I'm less than excited about the production, but oh well...
Monkey
At empyrean's request.
I needed a break from mixing my own songs anyway, so I threw together this quick & dirty cover of the Counting Crows song in 15 minutes, and uploaded it warts and all - one take off the top of my head, complete with missed notes, words, and chords. Enjoy.
Not For the Season
A cover of a song by Wilco or Loose Fur, depending on how you look at it. [more inside]
when your lover has gone
Ok I didn't write this. It is my cover of a jazz standard written by einar a. swan... the version I was sorta aping was a version recorded by Billie Holiday. I tried to give it an En Vogue "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" vibe, but er, that didn't exactly happen. I recorded this 12? years ago, as a joke since I had no experience singing any jazz tune whatsoever, and this is what came out. Note the thoroughly consistent out-of-tune Zeta-bass part (my bass guy could not play that thing properly since he never had any real fretless training), and conversely, his killer bass solo, in which he duplicates the original guitar? Horn? solo from the Holiday track. I think that was a PRS, I forget. recorded to the original ADAT, I think, synced to a 25mhz At&t P1 laptop w/4mb of ram and the original non-audio Logic midi sequencer... I also played the clarinet and sax parts, brushed snare & cymbals, my buddy Errol tossed out the acoustic guitar licks. used by austin's Realm Dance Project in 2003 for one of their goofy nyc Fringe Festival pieces. More of what I do currently here at: ! the edison carter project !
Beware of Darkness
First of all, hello.. long time mefi reader/listener and I just registered a few days ago. I heard this song for the first time about a month ago (don't laugh) and fell in love with it. I've listened mainly to the acoustic version and only a few times to the other version. I couldn't sleep tonight so I recorded this version, which is kind of a mix between the two. Let me know what you think about it, (ie: do I suck at guitar / singing / recording / making posts, etc...).
Power of Love
Thanks to two class cancellations due to ice storms in the Capital, I was able to arrange and record this Valentine's day treat. Imagine Huey Lewis, baritone, with a banjo.
You Are My Sunshine
Let's call it EMOldtimey. Or, really, let's not. It's not a damned clean rendition, but with this old heartbreaker you don't have to be. My pre-verbal niece was purported to love it, and that's good enough for me.
That Letter
To celebrate my 7th MetaFilter Birthday (yay!) here is another track from the band I was in in 1991. This is a cover of a Young Fresh Fellows song. It's a little rough. There's another thing we cover during the intro part before I start singing -- see if you recognize it.
Fascination Rap
Oh, will I ever regret this one. A couple of years ago in AskMeFi, I referred to a joke version of "Rapper's Delight" I once did, combined with the riff from the Cure's "Fascination Street". This is that very "rap". It is very rough -- we just did it as a joke for Halloween 1991, and we practiced it... maybe... once. (You know those goofy things you come up with in practice that crack you up but should never be played in public? Yeah.) So there are lots of screw-ups in the recording. Lots. But it was a huge hit with our friends, and so for the remainder of that band's short life, we had to play it at every gig. Unfortunately, it was only recorded the first time we played it. Recording notes: this was recorded by someone in the audience on a boombox, but it's not bad considering that. Definitely not high fidelity, though! Also, there's some talking for a minute at the beginning of the track. Despite everything, I think it's kind of fun. But painful. Definitely painful. "Enjoy."
(can you believe we were totally sober when we did this?)
Astronomy Domine
Threw a one-off session together years ago, for the fun of it. A friend was in town for a couple of days, and we wanted to do something fun, but easy. We cut the music live, then overdubbed the vocals, & mixed it all in an afternoon. Mark Hallman mixed & played rhythm guitar, & Bradley Kopp played an awesome solo. I'm on bass, as usual, and singing the low harmony, and believe it or not, the "Ahhh, Ahhh" falsetto part. Can't do that anymore. The original song, of course, was written & recorded by Pink Floyd on A Saucerful Of Secrets, and again live on Ummagumma.
Man or Astroaletz
Someone asked for more rockabilly. This is a song written by some friends, Los Esquizitos, performed and recorded here by us, with a drum track laid by their drummer.
Auld Lang Syne - Harvey Girls NYE 2006
A quick, messy, ridiculous recording made earlier this evening at Chez Harvey Girl, featuring melissa may on vocals, sleepy_pete on vocals and acoustic guitar, and moi on vocals and casio and maybe some banjo too but I can't honestly remember if we did that track.
Still Crazy After All These Years
I needed to do some audio/MIDI stuff in Digital Performer for a class project. My professor called it "a great waltz...for people with three and a half legs."
Out of Luck
Garagey powerpoppy cover of a song by the Pointed Sticks. Recorded almost exactly 15 years ago by the band I was in at the time, NOT!. (That's the band name. Not a comment on whether we recorded the song. Yes, we had seen Wayne's World. I'm sorry.) There are some glitches that are on the original tape. I'm singing lead and harmony. I might be playing some rhythm guitar. This was our rowdy set closer, and lots of fun.
Jesus Etc. (cover)
Acoustic cover of Wilco's Jesus Etc.
99 Red Balloons (cover)
Just fooling around. The clicking beat is a zippo lighter, edited in Garageband.
Destruction Baby
A cover of a Number Girl song. Vocals done in one take, sung in Japanese. Programmed in Reason from the band score.
Radio Cure (cover)
A lofi, live, solo acoustic cover of the fantastic Yankee Hotel Foxtrot track, recorded a few years back. Music has been way too slow the last couple days, dammit.
Seattle Suxxx
A cover of a song by my good friend Dan Huff. This is from back when I played with a band called I Need Sleep.
La Palma (1958)
A song originally by Mono Blanco, performed here by my band. We decided to EQ it in such a way that it would sound as if coming from an old radio. Being upbeat and cheerful, I thought it would be a good way to start the week.
Waltz Number Two
I, too, recorded this song! It came out a little bit weird, which is probably appropriate.
